The top sports reporter of the early 20th century, Grantland Rice, reported that Knute Rockne tried out the “win one for the Gipper” on him well before its actual locker room use. Rice advised against it, Rockne did it anyway. This seems to be standard operating procedure at Notre Dame.

In general I turn off the TV when they start playing heart-tugging stories about athletes. Too much incentive to play them up.
