Matthew – I know nothing about creating art, but you really seem to have found a comfortable drawing style over the past two stories. To my eye, your scale and detail are much more refined in this arc.

Thanks for noticing that. I’ve definitely found a “comfort” zone while doing Marty and Spud. The first story arc was a real learning curve for me as all my artistic influences wanted to come out at once! (Locher, MacNelly, Aparo, Adams, Steadman, Searle, Byrne, Giordano, Watternson, Borgman, Sienkiewicz, Toth, etc). The past two story arcs have depended on use of computer models for some of the sets (the planes in the previous story and the bridge and ship in this story) and using those models really forces you to consider scale and proportion to a “set” for your characters. It is a welcomed challege and change for me. My proportions were a bit wonky before and I’m finally getting more comfortable with them.
Regarding detail…I’m definitely from the Locher/Gould/Toth/Caniff school wherein you really only show the detail that is necessary. Of course, there is an ART in figuring out what is necessary. For the Enterprise bridge, most people are at least basically familiar with what it SHOULD look like, so I use that to guide the amount of detail that should be shown.
Sorry for the long, rambly answer!
