Ahhh…just saw that now, Gweedo (thanks for letting me know).
My displeasure with the current team has nothing to do with them personally. I’ve spoke to Mike on the phone (he seems to be a decent fella) and I’ve spoken to Joe at many conventions over the years (I’m a fan of his art).
Where I am NOT happy with the current DT is this wink and nod approach to the fanboys. Several commenters at the DT board itself say they don’t get some of the obscure references and characters. This is BAD storytelling 101. Especially when, in order to FULLY understand the story being told, you the reader have to do research or have others explain it to you. That is VERY BAD storytelling 101 and I can’t imagine that NEW readers that are totally unfamiliar with Dick Tracy would want to feel as though they have to read 80 years worth of strip in order to understand today’s strip.
This isn’t a gripe I have about just Dick Tracy, but about many comic BOOKS too. They tell stories that rely on a intimate knowledge of the character’s history and continuity and it is assumed that everybody reading knows it. Bad storytelling 101 again. Everything a reader needs to know should be IN THE STORY. Too many of the winks and nods to the audience that have happened during the Curtis/Staton run strike me, and this is just my opinion, as fan wankery. I don’t enjoy it.
The biggest sin, and one that I don’t know I can ever forgive, is the adding on, needlessly, to Dick Tracy’s origin. That was a total “piss on it and make it mine” moment that send the message, “Hey kids, look, Chester Gould was WRONG and got it WRONG, but luckily we are here to correct his mistake”. I can think of nothing more offensive. Especially since the origin of that “addition” has fan fic roots. As any PROFESSIONAL comic book/strip writer will tell you, “the first story you’d write as a fan should be the LAST story you’d write as a pro”.

Different strokes, Gweedo. DT at this point is like an ex to me. I"m sure she’s happy and people like her new beau, but I have no interest in it.

“Normal monster duties” will become part of the M&S vocabulary. It is a great line.

@emptydog
Thanks, emptydog. I’ll have to work that into future storylines…like I always have a “Hey buddy” line in a story. :-)
