Marmaduke is America's most lovable Great Dane. Created by Brad Anderson, the classic comic canine has delighted newspaper readers since 1954. Marmaduke lives with the Winslow family, who, try as they might, just can't seem to get him to obey. Despite his antics, the playful pooch is top dog in the neighborhood and on the comics page, where he has endeared himself to readers in more than 20 countries. The daily panel also strikes a chord with pet owners, many of whom write to Anderson to comment on Marmaduke as if he were a real dog.

I had a dog in the 70s, early 80s that would try to bite fireworks before they went off. Ever other dog I had was like Marm.

One dog I had was the still sadly missed Sooty. She would sit between my feet and quite happily watch fireworks. Pickle dog, on the other hand, is the complete opposite and absolutely hates them.

My first dog when I was growing up used to dive under the couch when she heard fireworks, our second dog used to dive under the blankets on the bed.

Nice touch, printing this on Canada today to show that we, too , can feel a brief surge of jingoistic patriotism.

My Basset Hound George loves fireworks. My Terrior, Ms Terror is afraid of her own shadow. Wednedsday George will be in Delano with me watching the fireworks….Ms Terror will be hiding under the blanket of her doggie bed more than likely.
