Good for her parents for putting up a unified front.

In my neighborhood the kids would get a fancy Schwinn bike with 20 inch wheels, like a Sting Ray or an Orange Krate with the gear shift on the cross bar. Their grandparents would buy them these small expensive bikes, but it would be their last bike. These kids would soon grow out of it and there was no money to get a bigger bike. They would look ridiculous riding it when they were big, but finances change, grandparents stop working.

I had a black Schwinn bike for years. Then I got hit by a car while trying to cross a highway, and that was the end of the bike. My next bike was maroon or scarlet, but I don’t remember the make. I went out to the garage one day to ride it, and found that my brothers had been cannibalizing it for parts for their bikes. Don’t remember telling them I didn’t need it anymore…

This really dates me, but my brother’s bike was a J. C. Higgins and mine was a Firestone. Sorry, Maria, that tactic didn’t work when you wanted a cell phone, and it’s not likely to work for a bike, either.
