I once wrote down “The less you know, the safer you will feel.”

Never had this assignment. In my neighborhood there wouldn’t have been much to write. Most kids stayed inside all day and watched TV. I could have wrote about the boring jobs I had but nothing interesting ever happened on them. People would talk at me without looking at me in order to explain what needed to be done, and when finished I was paid. I had to stifle my thirst and hunger until I was paid and could go the the grocery or the gas station for a candy bar. The bathroom was rarely a problem – without food that need went dormant. Although I did use the park bathrooms to clean up in, bringing a bar of soap with me.

My summer holidays consisted of my mother telling me what I was going to do, who I was allowed to see, where I was going and how many days were left before school started again.
