Dad is sharper than he appears.

Dads tend to be smarter than TV sitcoms and movies want us to think. When Robert Young was first approached to do FATHER KNOWS BEST, he turned it down, because they wrote the character as a hapless sort who never knew best. The title was supposed to be a joke. They changed it for him. “Daddy is a dummy” is a cliche so old, I don’t know where it began. But it certainly goes back to the earliest comic strips.

When I was a kid, “love hurts” usually meant a trip over my dad’s lap.

A stable hand is needed to be a watchmaker. You don’t want to have the shakes.
