Tang owes a lot of its success to John Glenn. Until millions of people saw him drinking it on his orbital flight, sales were actually very poor. William Mitchell, the chemist who invented Tang, was also the inventor of Pop Rocks.

Kool Aid doesn’t have the association with astronauts.

It really has no association with Jim Jones either. It was another drink, Fruit Aid is what they used.

Once I got that high then the whole thing tumped over on me. I was hurt but not badly. Just had to be careful.

But it IS associated with Jim Jones. It’s a mistake, perhaps caused by misreporting, but it’s irrevocably associated with Jones, because that was the name repeated over and over at the time. It’s also associated with Ken Kesey.

We had swings in our basement when I was growing up. Obviously, you couldn’t go very high, as basement ceilings tend to be low. But it was pretty uncool to fly off the swing and land on my head on the concrete floor. That’s how I became a cartoonist, I’m sure.

I remember when Tang was a big deal. Now it probably isn’t even sold anymore.

We used to buy a jar of tang, use it once, next time it would be orange rock-like substance in the jar. I guess the Apollo space modules has less humidity than our camper.
