Maria is definitely a little “Rita” in training (and not just because she looks like her).

As far as her appearance, Maria looked that way first. John and I created this strip ten years ago, when Kyle Miller was just taking over WD from Andre Noel, and Rita had long hair in a pony tail. So any unintended resemblance would be Rita growing more like Maria.

Yes, Maria and Rita are not at all related except my brain created their personalities…

Rita’s personality has evolved over the years. Maria’s is still in gestation. I decided early on how I wanted to draw Maria, but Rita’s hair only changed when John wrote a gag about her getting a makeover. It’s been more of a problem keeping Maria’s Dad from looking like a Jay clone, but again, we started work on Maria long before I was drawing WD.

It is like those who read “Frazz” keep thinking he is an adult Calvin from C and H. (He isn’t at all.)

Little Maria is just one of those ornery recalcitrant children of fiction.
