Maria is a kid who sees things her own way- and expects the world to see it her own way too! Her friend Joey is more practical. He helps keep her grounded, though that’s as easy as handling a Thanksgiving balloon in a hurricane. Sue is special and she knows it- better than anyone. She’s writing her autobiography now, but she’ll live it later. Bob takes things slower. Ms. Payne is their teacher- she enjoys her job, she truly does. She’d enjoy it even more without the students.

The little girl on Santa’s knee is Dutch:
“I’ve got everything I just want to have this lovely lady…”

What movie is this from?

That’s about right. I learned Dutch about 20 years ago, and he scene plays very differently when you can understand what’s being said. Otherwise, you might react like Maria.

Right after I drew this, I went into the bedroom and saw that Chris had the movie on TV! Small world.

Sinter Klaus. My favorite movie scene of all time. The original “Miracle On 34th Street” is the best Christmas movie ever.

Lots of Hollanders in my area; when I was growing up they had a saying: You’re not much if you’re not Dutch!. We German-Russians nicknamed them the dike-jumpers. Not sure where that came from.

That’s amazing!

Right. But why would anybody put Dutch in an English cartoon? It’s as bad as PreTeena when they start speaking Lituanian. Thank you for translating it.

A lovely scene in any of the incarnations. Sebastian Cabot played Kris in the 1970’s remake. Don’t see that one very often.

Considering the Dutch fought the Spanish empire for 80 years with no hope of freeing themselves but they did. They had no hope through it all. They just knew it must be done.

To teach you something beyond your frame of the world .. it’s a big world, and wouldn’t it be great if we learned about each other’s differences and honored them as much as we could?
