By John Zakour (writer) & Scott Roberts (artist)
Maria is a kid who sees things her own way- and expects the world to see it her own way too! Her friend Joey is more practical. He helps keep her grounded, though that’s as easy as handling a Thanksgiving balloon in a hurricane. Sue is special and she knows it- better than anyone. She’s writing her autobiography now, but she’ll live it later. Bob takes things slower. Ms. Payne is their teacher- she enjoys her job, she truly does. She’d enjoy it even more without the students.

Why does this remind me of certain strips from “Calvin & Hobbes”?

Me too! It’s just like the strips in which Calvin and Hobbes go for a death-defying ride in Calvin’s wagon. Love those strips.

Before we were given the go-ahead to do a Sunday, this gag was among the dailies. I suggested to John that it would make a better Sunday, and give me more room to open it up.

Because he did this exact same strip, as did Fox Trot with Jason and Marcus

Hmm- not ‘exact same’- they’re all variants. Comics thrive on borrowing themes. I said “Calvin and Hobbes” when John first sent this one, but I thought it would be fun to see how we could handle it. But Calvin in many ways was Dennis The Menace crossed with Barnaby. And he was building on crazy things Little Lulu had done.

Yes and in the real world how many of them are killed or terribly injured? Good thing in the comics it is funny and ultimately safe. Better to have it done in the comics in spectacular color than in reality. Go Maria and Joey~!!!!
