Hold on. If the comment on box #1 is true as stated in the explanation, then there is no banana there. But if the comment on box 3 is true, then the banana is there.

I thought the banana was in box #3 as well.

I still don’t get it, and I’ve been mulling over this all day.

The TRUE statement is on box 2…therefore box 3 and 1 are lies. It DIDN’T say that the bananas were under the box with the true statement! Just that only 1 is true…SO IF there’s “No bananas” under 2 (true), then 3 is lying. SO the bananas are under 1 because only then can there be only 1 true statement AND have bananas under a box!

The explanation given is not clear, but correct. I think a clearer logical explanation is: The clues on boxes 1 & 2 cannot both be false because that would mean there are two boxes with bananas. So that means the bananas have to be in box 1 or 2 (one is true and one is false). Box 3’s clue has to be a lie (there needs to be two lies) which means the bananas are NOT in box 2 making them in box 1.

Breaking the puzzle into cases:
If clue 1 is true and the others are false, then the banana is not in #1, the banana is in #2, and the banana is not in #2. This is a contradiction, so clue 1 cannot be true.
If clue 2 is true and the others are false, then the banana is in #1, the banana is not in #2, and the banana is not in #2. This seems to work out.
If clue 3 is true and the others are false, then the banana is in #1, the banana is in #2, and banana is in #2. This is a contraction, so clue 3 cannot be true.
By elimination, clue 2 must be true and the others must be false. Therefore, the banana is in #1.

Great, another good one I will use!
Thanks again for the June 10th card trick. As predicted, my nephews love it, so does my niece, and everyone else!
