What was up with your hair? Luann is one of the few characters whose eyebrows are located on her hair. Delta and Bernice have eyebrows in the traditional place near your eyes. Luann allows her eyebrows to wander off her face and into her hair and yet you are still able to tell her emotions while swathed in that hair.

What was with those shades? Sadly, early Delta would be considered a little bit of a racial stereotype these days, and the sunglasses were a part of that.

Why were our heads so big? Prior to Luann, Evans published the comic strip Fogarty, distributed free to high school newspapers. It featured the character Mr. Fogarty, who continues in the same role as a character in Luann. With such an ugly lead character, it was necessary to make the other characters cuter and there is nothing cuter than big heads. Just ask Mickey Mouse. He knows.

as someone wrote somewhere else……………….. in the past they had big heads because they thought they knew everything, but now they know that what they know is so little

Well, to be fair, 1985 was still a time where if one wore their “shades”, they were considered “cool”. That’s what Greg was first going for, with Delta. Luann and Bernice were “tragically unhip”, and no one else came along with the “suave” (before there ever was any “swag”). Had TJ come along then, he probably would have had them, too. If Brad wasn’t such a loafer then, he would probably have had them…..
