Sometimes, we turn the “looking glass” into a “magnifying glass”…..we’re harder on ourselves than the rest of the world is….

Sometimes, we man not even realize that what we think is “ugly” is actually not that way at all and are really the very thing that others admire… and what we magnify in the “nightmares” of our self-conscious mind, are really the “fabric of dreams” in another’s adoring eyes…..

It may be the only one who truly cares about Luann is there depicted.

    …no, not her mom. ;)

This one is throwing me off. Is this one of those “the hottest woman in the comic strip thinks she is not hot” moments? Why is Luann so snotty? If you push her eyebrows down to her face and color her hair black, there is not much difference between her and Nancy.

You could replace the mirror with Frank and the joke would still work.

This time, it seems that Luann is just the “middle man” in the “volleyball punch line” setup. Nancy’s “monologue” is to sum up how some feel as they age, then Luann’s role (this time) is just to set up why Nancy’s going through all of this…. with the result being (to use that [in]famous phrase in a bit of a twist: “Never trust a mirror under 30”….

Also the whole aspect that Nancy thinks the mirror’s not her friend anymore, and has ‘moved on’ to someone younger.. someone like Luann… so in essence, “the mirror itself is pretty vain”…

Sometimes a mirror is just a mirror. What you see is what you bring to it, on many, many levels.

It’s fun to see Nancy acting her age! Although somewhat overlooked as a female character in favor of Luann’s age group, she is interesting. In fact, I’d enjoy seeing some flashback episodes of her when she was 17, sort of like what has been sometimes done with Pam (Crankshaft) Murdoch in another comic strip.

I guess Nancy will have Frank go in their bedroom and take down all the mirrors from the ceiling.

For today’s soundtrack, I’ll submit “Lies”, by the immortal Stan Rogers, and “I Just See You”, by Tracy Newman. If you haven’t heard either of these, a few minutes on YouTube will be well worth your time. Trust me.

I think that’s actually part of the joke. Other than the hair color and eyebrows, they really do look the same…at least in cartoon land. We all know that IRL, when you’re closer to 50 than 40, you start seeing stuff in the mirror that other people might not notice.

Nancy looks great to others. But to herself she doesn’t measure up. Which is why even with Frank’s insistence, she won’t put on a bikini again.

The thought just occurred to me that it would be fun to see what Tiffany’s mother is like, and what sort of dialogue they have.
