I asked an upperclassman what subjects he was taking. He said “Algebra.” I said, “What’s that?”
He said, “Oh, that’s where you spend all year finding out what X is.”
I wanted extra help, so I said, “Tell me, what IS X?”
I can relate to those little guys.

The concept of time is very confusing in Luann’s universe. While at first I am confused that 9th grade kids would be a good head and half shorter than Luann and company, I also recognize that if you spend decades going to high school as Luann and her friends have, perhaps you start off at a much younger age in 9th grade than you would in our universe.

Those ninth graders sure don’t look like 14 year olds to me.

It’s the shape of the head that gives the age away. Tweens/middle school students’ yearbook pix show more spherical shaped heads, where teens/high school students’ pixx show more elongated, adult-shaped heads. You can see the change just observing the freshmen thru the year—children to young men and ladies.

The little blonde girl in front of Luann looks to be about 9, maybe 10 years old. She needs to take Gunther’s hand and help lead him to his first class.

Why do all her classmates regard Tiffany as clueless? Tiffany has definite ambitions in life, and she actively pursues them. That’s the opposite of “clueless”. Luann is more nearly adrift, coming up with unrealistic goals out of the blue like attending Julliard and then abandoning them the next day. That’s more nearly “clueless”.

    .
We make sure the paper stays blank and remains a valuable commodity. Unlike the Federal Government, who can take a valuable commodity like paper, print something on it, and render it totally worthless…

I think the 9th graders in panel 1 appear like they look to the seniors, not necessarily their actual appearance.

Just noticed that my height and the years since my graduation are the same numbers…5 2. I must be tired as I am now talking about nonsense. Goodnight all.
