Yesterday’s Business. One topic explored in yesterday’s lively and entertaining comment section was the diminishing role Bernice plays in the strip. I for one miss her and wish that she would return with as big a roles as she had in the early days. Night-Gaunt49 asked me to show how Bernice could use her interesting attributes. I took that as asking what kind of arcs could be centered on Bernice. I only had about 90 minutes to prepare this. I am not making excuses, but as many of you should realize, the more time and effort you put into something, the more you get out of it. If at one of their production meetings, Mr. Evans and crew were to sit down and really attempt it, they could come up with a number of great roles for my favorite lady. Here goes.

It always seems to take a picture or image to make her happy…

So how could the writer display Bernice’s interesting attributes? Please make that list. Tomorrow would be fine.
After Quill returns to Australia, a new boy comes to Pitts High, not Aaron and not Zane. For the sake of this story, we will cal him Levy. Levy is intelligent and good looking. Luann and Bernice are at their locker, getting whatever it is they need for the next class. As they rummage thur the locker, they hear someone say, “Be still, my heart.” They turn and see the boy looking at them. Of course Luann immediately sets her sights on him and naturally she assumes she is the one he is talking to. But Luann and Bernice are both shocked when they find out it is Bernice he is talking about. Then starts a long feud between the two friends, similar to how Luann wanted to hog all of Ben’s time when he was there. Luann mimics some of Tiffany’s behavior, trying to get Levy for herself. (As an aside, Luann behaving in a manner similar to this has happened, so this will not be unheard of). Levy and Bernice becomes the in couple. Tiff makes a pass at him several times and each time he walks away. They go to the school junior prom and dance so well they are crowed the king and queen. Bernice gets an upgrade. She still is not as foxy as Luann, but there is a remarkable difference. On a school outing to the forest, they get separated from the group and Bernice figures out how to find their way back.

Bernice is working at Borderline Books. (Making an assumption here that she still has that job.) She is putting up the newest shipment when she someone behind her says, “Well, it has certainly been a long time.” Bernice turns at the voice, knowing even before seeing that her old boss has returned. Sure enough, there is Ann, back in her former job. At first, Ann is a semi-good boss, but it does not take long before her old habits emerge again. She has Bernice doing all sorts of menial and degrading tasks for her. Bernice decides it is time to get even. Unlike another person that found himself in that position, she the gonads to handle it herself and does not get TJ to come in and defend her. Over a period of several arcs she turns the tables on Ann, getting her to be the one doing the dirty work. Unlike the Grinning Fool, Bernice does not lie, cheat, swindle, and con to reach her goal.

Bernice is in class and a project is coming up. It is a two person team project and Fogarty is the one assigning the teams. He teams Bernice up, not with Luann, not with Gunth, not with Tiff or Ox or Les, but with Crystal. Bernice and Crystal have some animosity between them from the competition they had for Zane. There is friction between them and at the start, each of them sabotage the other’s part of the project. The time comes however that if they want to complete the assignment, they have to work as a team. They discover all sorts of things about each other and find out they have more in common than they realize. During this arc we see the full tattoo on Crystal’s back and we discover what her last name is. We learn about hobbies besides reading that Bernice has. Bernice gets Crystal out of the Goth look, at least for a short time. We see an interesting thing: when they hang out in Bernice’s room, Bernice is the one on the bed and Crystal is sitting at the foot of the bed. While Bernice does not break the Tiff/Crystal bond, Crystal from that point on is for more open to her and many times invites Bernice to sit with her and Tiff at lunch.
