The Gingerbread House turns into the Gingerbread Caravan and they realise the truth, there IS a trailer amongst them!

I think the rat might just be a shape-shifting Goatsucker. —Nah; that’s too far-fetched, even for LSoS. …But a rat and no Goatsucker is rather foreboding.

Conventions of literary drama indicate that Lucius, shortly after bonding with our hero, is not long for this world.

“I thought i thaw a puddy cat”, was what he was going to say to lighten the mood before he was interrupted.

Or maybe, in a Jimmy Cagney sort of voice, “You dirty rat…”

You think so? Why? The Piper has already demonstrated the ability to mesmerize Rufus and Biff, why wouldn’t he be able to do the same thing to Lucius and Margo? Don’t forget, Goatsucker was gorging herself on rats, yet she’s thin and starved here. Further, by chasing after what they thought was Goatsucker, Margo and Lucius have run off to an area where the trail has almost disappeared, as if the idea were for them to become lost. The Piper doesn’t have to literally shapeshift into Chupa, just cast a glimmer that makes the victims think that that’s what they’re seeing. Similar to Rufus thinking that he was hearing his mother singing.
