Odd how the Ricin shows up after Boston like the anthrax and 911 happened in 2001. History is repeating a cycle.

So your understanding of democracy means it can excuse attempted murder?

Obviously Sr NONliberal was making a partisan remark. How you get that as an excuse for attempted murder makes no sense what-so- ever.

Definitely has been a rough start for Obama’s second term. His agenda seems to be having a hard time getting traction. Maybe he will do something radically different and try being a leader. Obviously his “charm campaign” didn’t work. Wouldn’t it be radical if he closed Gitmo, ended the Bush tax cuts, withdrew now from Afghanistan, pulled our troops out of the middle east and Africa altogether, canceled the Patriot Act, pay down the debt by half, and then my favorite, maintain transparency and restore civility to Washington. Oh well, one can dream…

What no dimwitted cartoon about the gutless senates vote on background checks?

Great comments Mickey. In fact, if Mr. Obama were to actually do all of the things you mentioned, I would be able to vote FOR him instead of against a lesser opponent next time!.
I know Hillary and Biden are the frontrunners for the Dems. I just think there are better people out there than any of the party’s front runners.
New, On ABC!! “So You Want to Lead A Nation!” CBS can have, “American Leaders!”, and NBC can do “The Leaders!”
More people might vote than do during elections.
Again, thanks for keeping the level of debate high.
    Respectfully,
    C.

I thought the reason for not passing the background check bill was easy to understand. In both the Aruora Co & Sandy hook shootings the guns were obtained legally, we have adequate laws already on the books. The “elephant in the corner” is a non- existant mental health care system. When will our leaders show the courage and sanity to address a real issue instead of hiding behind popular myths?

Koresh’s guns were bought legally through gun shows too. Wouldn’t it have been nice if that hadn’t been possible?

I agree Respectful Troll’s reference to voting for President Obama was a little clumsy, but if you take it in the hypothetical as I believe it was meant you wouldn’t post your ignorant hate. He did not ignore the fact that President Obama is term limited. His comment went right into who the next candidates were going to be.

If you were anything but a vituperative and disdainful member of these boards you would know that Mr. Downs is not a liberal, unless you define liberal as anyone left of the extreme right or who expresses tolerance and intelligence. He may have liberal views but he is a moderate who identifies and calls out wrongs from both sides. He also calls for civility and constructive dialogue from both sides to try and reach a conclusion that will benefit all not just a favored class. To attack Respectful Troll is to show the greatest contempt for graciousness, wisdom and kindness. We, at least most, all would appreciate it if you would simply go away, at least until you can show some respect. You don’t have to agree with everyone else, just don’t attack those who try and succeed at raising the bar for interaction here.

You owe Respectful Troll an apology.

I agree it would be nice if President Obama could achieve all that you enumerate. However there are forces at play that prevented some of those achievements and I think some arrogance and simple politicking that prevented others. For example closing Gitmo was prevented by the republicans, not by a lack of interest on the part of the President. Ending the bush era tax cuts was denied by the republicans for the first four years and then only the small portion that was repealed in the end was allowed by both sides. The rest were made permanent by a lack of wisdom on the part of both sides, but you still can’t deny that the republicans think their (historically low) taxes are too high as it is and don’t even want to pay for their wars. I say their wars because which is the war mongering party? Which party fights for us to have the largest military in the world so we can play the world’s cop? The Democrats want us to have a military on par with the government the republicans want, a “right size.” Defend our interests at home, let the rest of the world pay to defend themselves. When was the last time we were paid back for defending another country? Our ally agreements call for us to assist in the defense, not pay for and provide the preponderance of it. Afghanistan is far more complex than any citizen understands, but we are in the first stages of withdrawing there. If it had not been the proverbial “red headed step child” to king george’s personal pet war maybe we would be out by now. But President Obama had to go in and clean up baby bush’s mess before he could withdraw. As for paying down the debt by half, that was probably one of the stupidest comments he could have made, especially not knowing the extent of the economic crisis unraveling before us. Conditions were beyond his control but he still owns that comment. The Patriot Act was wrong, wrong, wrong but he continued it. I do have to wonder what information he used to decide to keep that Constitutional violation in force. And as for maintaining transparency, well he blew that I think with his first appointment. Deplorable for sure, but that is part of what made him not a great choice, just the better of two bad choices. As for civility in Washington, look to your own party and their corrosive rhetoric, #1 political goal is making him a one term president, hoping President Obama fails, and on, and on.

All in all I think you made a very good comment, but as is normal with just about any comment from either side, there is a lot more to the story than what comes out in the comment. Thank you for your civility.

Wouldn’t it have been nice if Reno’s justice department would have arrested him on one of his daily runs? How many women and children would still be alive?

WAIT WAIT… isn’t that exactly what he promised to do in 2008? I seem to remember the “hope” that maybe “this guy” would really “change” the way business is done in DC.

but … no … just another thug politician.

My brother, it isn’t the lack of laws, but rather the lack of enforcement.

Now I know that gun shows provide ample opportunity for a person with nefarious intentions to purchase a gun from a “private owner”. After all, if you have a gun you want to sell and the dealer will give you 250 for it but you run into this guy with 500 cash …. well….

So you pass the law to require a background check on all gun purchases at gun shows. How exactly will you enforce it? Will you station police in every aisle? Will there be 20 in the parking lot? Will the swat team be running to every car trunk lid going up?

And how do you enforce that rule when a person is talking with his neighbor in the den of his home and a “sale” takes place? Is the gun owner going to say “wait a second Jack. I have to call the feds and make sure you are allowed to own one first.”

    Prohibitions create black markets.

I was being facetious, Scott. sorry.

There were so many people making fun at Mr. McConnall’s expense because of his comment of “Our primary goal is to make Obama a one term president.” This led to cartoons on GC and comedians everywhere talking about how Mr. McConnall might have more success in keeping Obama from being a three term president. Even though a few conservatives expressed concern that Mr. Obama might try to become a three term president…hopefully in jest or sarcasm.

I also agree that killing people like the marathon bombers, eric rudolph, tim mcveigh, and even bin laden is too merciful and makes them into matyrs as well as eliminates sources of info. I posted recently my opinion they should be in a room where they see pictures of why they are in jail every day of their life along with the voices and/or images of survivors who want to talk to them. Whether it’s to forgive them or to taunt them, I don’t care. But just in case there is no such thing as hell, putting them out of their misery without making them regret, repent, and feel real pain and shame for the evil they did is just too damned merciful.
And I’ve been told that I am a very liberal voice.
    No objectivity at all.
Take care Scott. I always enjoy the opportunity to agree with you.
    Sincerely,
    C.
