At least our politicians just take it out of our paychecks and say “It’s for the kids!”.

Actually most of the depositors in Cyprus are Russian oligarchs trying to avoid taxes in Russia. Cyprus is the Med’s version of Cayman Islands.

Could you actually prove that ‘most of the depositors in Cyprus are Russian oligarchs trying to avoid taxes in Russia’, other than you read it on the internet? What gives a country the right to confiscate a percentage of a persons savings without voting for a tax increase? This proves that socialism works as long as they are spending other people’s money.

@greyolddave
oh so the roughly 60k British subjects that will lose huge sums of money are really Russian? FYI Russia has some of the lowest tax rates in the world why do you think there are French millionaires moving there to get away from taxes?

Everything has to come back to Bush, for you, doesn’t it? Last I checked, no American President has anything to do with this issue. Go troll somewhere else.

If you listened to news reports other than right-wing hate radio you would know that this has been reported, repeatedly. Perhaps the qualification of “most depositors” should read “many depositors” but from information available a great deal of money in the Cypriot banks is of Russian origin and perhaps not to evade taxes but it is also believed that a great deal of that Russian money is being laundered thanks to Cyprus’ very lax banking regulations. So whereas greyolddave may not be 100% accurate with his qualifications of “most” or “tax evasion” his basic point is very accurate. But greyolddave is absolutely correct with his assertion that Cyprus is the Med’s version of the Cayman Islands.

@paul bolander
There are 60k British subjects with deposits in Cypriot banks? Good to know. How many Russians have accounts? How much do the Brits have cumulatively deposited compared with the Russians? I don’t know the numbers but perhaps that is why the Russians are the ones referenced instead of the British.

As did I. But I must give props to both for identifying that it is the EU that is demanding this tax, not the Cypriot government. Lisa’s reference is a little more prominent though.

If it works, it is a small price to pay for fiscal accountability.
