I don’t think Ms. Benson thought this metaphor all the way through.

If the US economy is a car, and we’re riding on empty, what should we do? Pretty sure filling up the tank is the correct answer. What does the economy run on? Capital (cash). To me, that sounds like she’s calling for another stimulus package.

We could also drive the car less, but I don’t think you can get anywhere if you don’t drive.

What you don’t get K8 and Lisa does is that the next gas station is 500 miles away and this car gets 24 MPG at best and has a 16 gal tank. Yeah go ahead step on it.

What will you do when it cost a day’s wages for a loaf of bread?

So taking capitol out of the market with taxes is putting money into whose tank? Why don’t you try again after you take a eco 101 course.

    • That’s what they get for going on a long trip with an inefficient car. They should go get a better one.

    Econ101: Trickle down doesn’t work.

Taxes: Bush Tax cuts aren’t going to get repealed, although if we truly cared about deficit we’d have to remove them (we can’t spend all of this money on war, DoD, and National security, failing everything else, and not pay for it, these things are not free, stop pretending they are). If anything, the package is going to get modified so that the tax cuts on the top groups (who aren’t hurting) get repealed and go back to the way they were when we had something more akin to economic prosperity (Clinton). Economic prosperity for the top 5% of the country doesn’t work when the bottom 95%, the vast majority of the population, continues to evaporate. They’re the ones who buy goods in our consumer driven economy.

Without consumer purchases, stocks do not return on investments which means investors will not invest.

    — But anyway, cute comic.

Yesterday, the administration said we should expect an underperforming economy and high unemployment for at least 2 more years. Apparently, It is finally beginning to sink in for them.

Remember the primary goal of this administration is re-election in 2012. Building the foundation, now.

Bruce, you’re wrong. He’s closed all the gas stations as well.

Considering the indicator was below E when Bush left office, I’d say we’re making progress.

“…the next gas station is 500 miles away and this car gets 24 MPG at best and has a 16 gal tank. Yeah go ahead step on it.”

Bruce, that may very well be the case. I was merely pointing out that the metaphor seemed flawed.

I wasn’t advocating for stepping on it. I’ve done my share of driving my car on empty, but only when I’m in town and close to a station [yes, it’s bad for the car]. But I make sure to fill up and see to it that everything’s in good working order when I go out for long trips.

It seems to me there are a couple of options…

    • We say “screw it” and leave that form of transportation [capitalism] to rust on the road where we left it

or [since there isn’t already a gas station near by–and I do fault the Bush administration for blowing the surplus, and choosing to invest in “gas stations” in places we didn’t need them, e.g. Iraq.]

    • We build a gas station where we are [yes, on borrowed money] so that we can drive somewhere where we’ll be able to make the money to pay off the gas station[s] we need to build along the way to get there.

That’s how I see this whole metaphor playing out. And I don’t think that’s what Ms. Benson meant. Hence my original comment.

The wars mean more pallot loads of shrink wrapped cash…all handled by private security…in unaccountable areas…disappearing for good deeds they say …but we’ll never know. Meanwhile in Iraq they seem to have lost track of 8 Billion in payoffs to the crimianl culture that really isnt that much different from what we call ‘businessmen.’ That’s a lot of money we could save.

No he did not close all the gas stations but Obama does want gas to be around 5$ a gal. As for “trickle down” well Obama wanted those stimulus passed right away so that “good government jobs will trickle down and help the communities they are in” his words. And of course if we spend spend spend right now on the D’s stimulus wish list unemployment will not go above 8% right? better the water lifts all boats then the trickle up poverty we have been having under Obama.
