I believe ACORN needs to be investigated, this appalling scandal has now reached three offices. (and the supervisor of each office should be fired, along with the workers.)

Their job is not to figure out how to help people scam or circumvent laws, regulations and tax codes. I don’t know that much about ACORN … I’ll have to read up

I prefix the following with the following: What I’m about to tell you is something I heard on the radio, and I can’t remember it well or even who I heard it from. And right now I’m too lazy to look it up and verify it, so I’m not even sure if I believe it. Maybe one of you can shed some light on it.
Anyway, the actual statement is: ACORN was founded from another organization who’s goal was to bring American government down by crippling it with welfare requests.

From what I saw in my fair city was that ACORN was registering members of the homeless society to vote in the Nov ‘08 election. I do walk through this one section of town twice daily , and did witness this part. Sounds good in theory at this point. From there, the accusations go that ACORN memebers went to the polls they registered these homeless people at, and voted for them. This I cannot verify firsthand. I do have a relative who stated to me that if this did accually occur, that the volunteers working the polls were actually the ones guilty of fraud for not validating the identity of the “registered “voters. The whole concept reeks to me. Any opinions on this?

senor, I looked at the two web sites mentioned in your post and it is certainly possible Rove and his minions are behind them. Remember, Rove once bragged to a report that “we’re the empire now,” referring to the right wing alliances in place since the impeachment of Clinton. (I posted his quote a couple of times before.) He told the reporter that the “reality-based journalists” were of no further consequence, because “the empire” could now create reality for everyone.

Rove and his minions are behind the scenes doing everything humanly possible to create a reality in which the Reps will pick up seats in 2010. That is their only goal at this time.

As far as Acorn, I applaud whoever caught them, they needed to be caught. And until a rigorous investigation takes place, they should receive no further federal money. You cannot take taxpayer funds and then use those funds to advise people on how not to pay taxes. Some heads need to roll and if the organization continues, it obviously needs oversight.

However, I’d like to see some enterprising folks occasionally do the same any non-profits receiving federal funds, from both sides of the political spectrum. It’s in effect a public service.

loco, Every county has the responsibility to set up their election procedures to try to prevent fraud. But I imagine attempting to vote fraudulently is a crime, I would think.

If you read my post above, I think ACORN needs to be thoroughly investigated based on the three videos that have come out so far.

I hate to sound like a nut, but Carl Rove is capable of anything. Like hiring people to work for ACORN, and have them do these things. And how convenient was that ? They had a film crew standing right there. The whole thing looks staged. I’m waiting to see who these actors are, how long they have worked for ACORN, and how and why this film crew was there, before I make up my mind. Things are not always as they seem.
There is suppose to be an investigation, let’s see.

The undercover videographers were two independent conservatives who learned from Michael Moore. So far three separate ACORN offices were exposed using the same trick.

In an article written by a National Review reporter he said ACORN’s founder Wade Rathke’s philosophy was “maximum eligible participation”. He was a follower of the vision that ” called upon activists to pack the welfare rolls to spread dependency, bankrupt the government and cause uprisings against the capitalist system”.

In a photo in today’s newspaper taken inside a ACORN office was a listing of the candidates they favored in next weeks primary. By law ACORN must be non-partisan. Yet, another law they broke.

The whole government would be different.

We may have had McCain as President.

The house and senate would not be filibuster proof either.

Sotomayor would not be a judge.

The stimulus package that supported pork barrel projects and liberal causes would not of went through.

The millions for abortion overseas would not of went through.

The child molester hate crimes bill would not of passed the house.

Obama could not of given 8 billion more to ACORN.

The list can go on and on.

Of course old bull does not understand. Only fox has reported on the story. And we all know a lefty would not want to watch such a station. I wonder why only Fox? Maybe because it was not on white house stationary? Our community organizer in chief has not commented on it yet so it can not be “news” Maybe there is another shoe to fall and Obama’s hiding?
Oh and one more funny, I went to the Acorn site. They really talk bad about Fox but then link up to them in their news section.

That is SO not true. It’s all over CNN and every major print outlet I read has run articles on it immediately after the first video was aired. This isn’t a liberal/conservative issue. It’s a legal/illegal issue, and people of all political stripes are appalled.

The Obama administration has signaled that it plans to secure passage of S.909, the “Hate Crimes” bill, this week. The House has already passed and the Senate is expected to vote this week on legislation that would create a new class of crimes based on the victim’s “actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.” Even more troubling is that S.909 could create special protections for pedophiles. Democrats voted down an amendment to the bill that would have excluded pedophilia and other “sexual orientations” from the definition of “sexual orientation.”

To be fair, the NYT did mention that the Census Bureau dropped Acorn from their efforts on Saturday– on p.A-12, and there was no mention of the video sting.
    Sunday– no coverage.
Monday, on an on-line blog, they mentioned that the Senate voted 83-7 to deny Acorn access to Federal housing funds, but didn’t mention the prostitution angle of the video sting.
Tuesday– nothing in the print edition.

church, two responses for you on Beattie 9/10 re the profit margins for insurance industry. Second post is repeated here, cuz it’s significant.
    ——–
i re-looked at the two sites you posted.
    http://biz.yahoo.com/p/sum_qpmd.html and one other

As I understand it, these profit margins are for stock price alone for a specific period if time. That does not represent the overall profits for the industry. It’s just the specific change in stock value for a period of time i can’t discern.

    is that your understanding too?

  28. churchillwasright

    churchillwasright said, 2 months ago

BCS: I’m not an economist, or work on Wall Street. When I heard TV pundits telling me that their profit margin was 3-4%, I looked online to verify what they said and, lo-and-behold, that’s what it said.

Why are you forcing me to learn.

An explaination on what profit margins mean hear

I’m still not clear on exactly what all these figures mean. There are industries that are in the negative, and obviously you can’t stay in the red for too long. Perhaps it’s just a snapshot in time. We’ve all heard Vegas is suffering, so that would explain why they are in the negative. But I’m sure that “gaming” is a profitable industry.

  29. believecommonsense

    believecommonsenseGenius_badge said, 2 months ago

church wrote: Why are you forcing me to learn.
Because you seem like a smart person and learning is good.

The chart you linked to previously is ONLY about stock prices, that’s not the totality of a company’s profit. Plus, the chart could, at most, only represent one quarter of a year. BTW, did you notice that the 1st column ini the chart said “1 day price change %”? It could be just for one day, I tried to find more explanation for what it represented but there wasn’t any.

If I find some info from a very trusted independent source I’ll share it with you.

I used to hire small firms to monitor news programs for clients and compile them on a VHS (now it would be a DVD). Is that similar to what you’re doing now?

BCS: That forcing me to learn line was in jest.

I don’t think that link is only about stock prices, but it may just be a snapshot of how individual industries are doing. (if you were an investor, you would want to know such things. Of course if I were an investor, I wouldn’t dismiss the gaming industry just because they currently have negative gross profits.) I would have hoped that someone with an investment background would have added to the conversation, but alas, it was not meant to be.

As far as monitoring news (as in a for profit enterprise), NO, although that sounds like a great job. As I said, I heard some “experts” saying HC profit margins were 3-4%, and I looked into it because I keep hearing about how their profits are obscene.

If you know about any jobs along this line, please let me know (as long as it’s not working for the DNC).

Can you tell me more about these small firms you hired and what types of clients wanted what type of information and what they were looking for? Were they the type that monitor Fox and Limbaugh looking for inaccurate statements taken out of context?

  34. believecommonsense

    believecommonsenseGenius_badge said, 2 months ago

church I knew the line was in jest, that’s why I gave you a small kudo by saying you were smart. And I see you’ve made a couple of funnies in your post above too.

I do believe when information you post is not accurate, you don’t do so deliberately and you’re willing to acknowledge the error, which I appreciate.

re the Yahoo Finance link, I found two sites, both personal blogger sites, that used the same data found at the Yahoo link. One was a stock broker and he referred to the chart as stock prices for one quarter, which was more explanation than the Yahoo site had. (Please don’t ask me for the link, I didn’t keep it, I’ve got links for reference coming out of my ears.)

Re monitoring news programs for clients. The way it mostly worked for me was I would call the firm when a special event, or news conference happened and they would compile all the coverage. We would present it to client, or provide to the client with a report on broadcast coverage. This was when I worked for a PR firm or was a self-employed consultant.

If you’re looking for business, touching base with PR firms in your area might be good idea, because they may handle a wide range of clients and imagine they would do something similar to what I did unless they were so large they did it in-house. All they would be looking for is mentions of their client, especially when it was a result of their PR efforts.

I never worked for the DNC, though I did contract work a couple of times for CA Dem Party. (smile)

My guess is there are organizations that would monitor different news channels for inaccuracies of a certain sort, but have no idea how that would work. yes, I think you were snarking off, but it’s entirely possible that is being done.
