Yes, what a terrible thing, that a quarter of a million new cars were sold last week, spurring jobs in auto construction, steel, aluminum, and auto recycling, and that all of the owners of new cars will pay significantly less for gas, and reduce our dependency on foreign oil. And the cost is a tenth of a percent of the bank bailout. That’s what a Progressive solution looks like.
spicecakes69 said, 3 months ago
If someone actually checked the stats of the cars already sold under cash for clunkers they ,might see American made autos top the list …. ahhhhh, that may involve work …. G-d forbid someone do something other than listen to the rantings of the party of NO!!!

I’m just so pissed at the whole thing. They wouldn’t take our minivan because they said the gas mileage is too good. I track the mileage on that van everytime we fill up. We’re not getting what the gov’t says we are.
And with the economy all in a shambles, they won’t finance us either, even though my husband’s credit score is 746 and he’s never defaulted on anything in his life.
I hate car shopping. Looks like we’re stuck in our 97 Voyager for a few years.

Yes Ian–the foreign car market.

Oh yes val it is a terrible thing, call me in 6 months when I predict half of those cars will be up for auction. Spurring jobs in the auto market? now that is a laugh. all it has done is prop up a month maybe 2 and then it will drop like a stone! that market is not that big and when you artificiality inflate the numbers. hopefully the smart ones will not place orders based on whet is happening right now or they will have a glut of inventory when this comes to pass.
DrCanuck said, 3 months ago
A BILLION DOLLARS injected into the American economy that our children will have to pay back? How dare they? That’s almost .05% of the 2 trillion dollars that Bush blew on wars of choice in the Middle East (which, apparently, is not an issue).
HOWGOZIT said, 3 months ago
It is not an issue Dr Cranium.

Well, actually it is an issue, HOWGOZIT. But I’ll save that for another discussion.

The auto industry accounts for a great deal of our economy. Just look around you. Even the convenience stores carry auto supplies. My only complaint with the program is that it is removing some good used autos from the market which would be purchased by students (or parents) and others with limited financial means.

I sympathize with your position, Justice22. I really do. I haven’t made up my mind on this aspect of the program.
But I see good reason to dispute your characterization of these cars being removed as “good”. The whole point is to remove vehicles from society that inordinately support our dependence on imported oil.
If these vehicles were simply put back into the market for further consumption, then we would not have achieved that end. Is it painful? Absolutely. But I am not persuaded that the pain is not justified.
HOWGOZIT said, 3 months ago
Not so tpenna–it is a non issue in today’s economy.

To bad it is a wash when you figure that those with hybrids and better millage cars drive more. Sorry but people drive as much as they can afford to drive. then add the new drivers on the road alway out number those getting off the road.
Your save the planet cry is just as hollow as the rest.

Do some of you understand the concept of struck costs. You go to a play and at intermission realize you hate it. Do you stay? Some will say I spent my hard earned money and therefore must stay. Others realize that the money has been spent, is gone, will never return and you are best off deciding what to do right then. What you don’t do is buy tickets a second time hoping it will get better.
What earthly difference does it make how much Bush spent in Iraq or Clinton in Bosnia or FDR in WWII? Is the expenditure we are making today worth it? It is obviously really bothering MsCanuck how much Bush spent. This is 2009 and all expenditures are on the onus of Obama.

I see your point, HOWGOZIT. But it is most assuredly a contemporary moral issue that needs to be further discussed. It seems to me that this is the point DrCanuck was driving at.
And harleyquinn, I don’t know a lot of people who drive as much as they can afford to drive, as you claim. Most people I know only drive as much as they need to drive.

2008 fiscal year deficit $400B
2009 fiscal year deficit when W left office and Obama took over Jan 2009= $1.1T
2009 fiscal defict June 2009 ALL above January because of Obama expenditures $1.86T a 69% increase
Read that again Obama on his own with a Democratic congress raised the deficit 69%
BCS all the imaginary unfunded deficits, unfunded tax cuts and war costs were in that Jan 2009 deficit.
The $.76T is all Obama- all Obama- all Obama and in 5 months and that doesn’t count 1 penny for health care.

Bush hid the cost of the war. You liked that better when your head was in the sand. And yes we are still on bush’s budget. He and you broke the country, now “WE ALL” have to pay for your foolishness.
Housing, Banks, and the Stock Market, didn’t bust on Obama’s watch, so STFU.

c’mon, GNW, you can make a point about Obama’s increasing the deficit without denying Bush’s deficits !

INanity, of course I have a stake. Right now, whenever I am in need of medical attention, I hook up the ol’ dog sled and mush the 8,000 kilometers to the American border to see a doctor in Montana. There, I claim illegal immigrant status so the doctor has to treat me for free, and the American taxpayer picks up the bill (thanks!) My personal stake is that I want to see the status quo maintained so I can continue this sweet deal.
You got a problem with that?

Aninny, When we ( Americans ) go to other country’s, We always claim to be Canadians. So, turn abouts is fair play. Besides we’re like cousins. Let it go.
DrCanuck said, 3 months ago
senor: You’re quite right; there are no two peoples on the face of the earth that are as similar than Canadians and Americans (but with a few definitive differences!)
Now let’s talk about this sewing of Canadian flags on American backpacks.

ANINNY, Their economy is very much tied to ours. We get much of our beef, lumber, and oil from them. They have a thing we put in their country called, ” the DEW line” to keep us safe. I believe our rail system around the Great Lakes depends on them. Our northern Cousins should care about what we’re doing.
The backpack thing is just a fad.

Great points GNW…When the facts don’t add up to make an argument on the left, they just throw out “Bush hid the cost of the war” to divert attention. This Democratically controlled Congress is the one that has been driving us into generations of debt (much of it under Bush). Now that we have a new great leader why aren’t we out of Iraq and Afganistan? Is he afraid of the consequences that may be put on his legacy if safety in the US or any progress towards democracy in the region made reverts? Where’s the change and transparency? I know there is no hope. It looks like same old politics to me.
Cash for clunkers, Tarp, and Bailouts are like having a huge personal debt and spending thousands a week in lottery tickets to get out of debt. It doesn’t make sense. Nobody on this forum spends recklessly to get out of debt. At some point the US needs to face the consequences for all this spending and become more fiscally responsible. The sooner the better.

Our friends the Germans who started this “cash for clunkers” nonsense now find, that because they did not require disabling of the engine The clunkers are being exported to the Eastern Europe and Africa.Where they will still pollute .It is a real shame that so many future “collectibles” are being crushed. I think I might trade my B3000 because at 241K miles it has begun to cost a little money in repairs(AC, emissions, etc) but, I am still of a mind to keep it til one of us dies
fennec said, 3 months ago
But I believe we did require that, didn’t we, Oldie? As to collectibles, well, if you have the space and the energy to maintain, OK. But here in MD, if you get a historic tag, you’re not supposed to drive it anywhere except (essentially) to the shows. Not super useful (of course, I know of guys who have a historic and still drive it every where, but that’s really beside the point.).

wminfeld, Democrats did not take control of Congress until Jan. 07, and just barely at that in the Senate.
You cannot point to Democrats driving up deficit spending for Bush’s first six years. They were the minority.

BCS, President Bush’s defecits did grow at the end of his first term after a recession and cost of the war. His defecits (based on actual spending) then improved until 2007 began ballooning with a Democratic Congress and bad policy by Bush including the Tarp bailout and many entitlements.
http://beldar.blogs.com/.a/6a00d834515edc69e201156e564165970c-pi
CBO estimates of projected defecits under President Obama are alarming for the country and probably even understated since tax revenues are coming down. All I am saying is that we can’t keep propping up select industries and cronies of corrupt politicians and keep spending recklessly on phony programs to get out of debt. We need fiscal responsibility.

^ What your saying is, let America fail. Obama must do nothing, and let the Depression begin.
That’s the kind of leadership we have come to expect from Republican’s STAY THE COURSE, and let her FAIL.
