    Wants no sissies,
So he reads to us from something called Ulysses…”

ulysses is said to the best irish novel ever. but, it so boring. does that mean that irish fiction is boring? or, that only irish people can truly understand it, and everyone else doesn’t?

Ulysses is a good book, but you had better be ready to slog through a bunch of verbal mud.

Couldn’t finish it either. It is too far out of time and no longer a great book. Slogging through verbal mud are exactly the words I used when I finally gave up and gave it to Goodwill.

Ulysses is sited as one of the top several English language books of the century by English teachers. Nobody else has it in their top 100. Or 1000.

James Joyce is BORING. The greatest writer of the 20th century: J.R.R. Tolkien. Millions actually enjoy reading his books!!!!!

another joyce book that is “great” literature is the portrait of the artist as a young man. irish tripe.
another boring book is hemingway’s old man and the sea. the bane of high schools students ever since he won the nobel prize.
could be worse, he could start reading zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance.

let’s not limit it to english lit or american lit…there is other tripes. camus’s stranger, grass’s the tin drum, pasternak doctor zhivago, and anything from ayn rand.
