Cortez had a whole lot of locals who were fed up with Aztec brutality on his side, not just his own men.

Cortez had allies and smallpox; the Aztecs never had that disease before and thus had no immunity.

The Aztecs also made many enemies which joined the Spaniards against them. They should have had better relations with their neighbors. The Spaniards would have been wiped out even if they left small pox behind.
