Someone’s been to San Francisco. Fisherman’s Wharf, to be exact.

I miss the wharf. Casually strolling along, eating crab or calamari from a paper cup, watching the pelicans down by the Ferry Building…. Sigh.

Anybody remember the Human Jukebox on the Wharf in the 70s?

Thanks, all. This Midwestern girl transplanted to S. Europe didn’t get it.

Cue up “Santa Monica Pier” (Holly Near).

I’m betting I’m the only other person on this comments page who knows that song. ;-) BTW, where do you live in S. Europe?

    S. Spain.

“Peddle to the pier, the Sta Monica pier!”

I lived in Madrid at one point in my life (not Southern Spain, but still…) as well as in SF. BTW, Santa Monica is in another world from San Francisco: Southern California.

I was looking at the yin/yang symbol on the bread wrapper, and wonder whether Kliban was making a reference to the Tassajara bakery, which had great bread and had a connection to a Zen center, I believe.

I feel sorry for anyone that has never tasted a true SanFrancisco sourdough.

Yeah, Tassajara Bakery was a direct offshoot of the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center (which is itself an offshoot of the San Francisco Zen Center). The bakery is no longer a going concern, alas, but Greens Restaurant (also connected with Tassajara Zen Center) is still going strong (and is right by the Wharf, besides).

Kliban could very well have included the Yin-Yang as a nod to Tassajara bread…
