Mr. Paul lost me on the day he said that store owners should have the right to decline service to people for any reason, including race/religion/culture. Mr. Paul added that such store owners are despicable and he would not give them his business, but the gov’t should not be able to force a person to give service to someone.
He is certainly more conservative than his father.
The role moderate Republicans of Reagan’s era filled is now filled by conservative Democrats and the Republicans have become a body that even Bob Dole considers broken and out of touch.
And both parties spend most of their time soliciting donations and dividing neighbors with fear, innuendo, and insults against their ‘opponents’.
I wish we had a truly viable third party. Fourth and fifth parties would be even better. But the R and D gov’t is very bipartisan when it comes to keeping other parties from getting a foothold in the legislature.

"Many of the Pauls’ ideas make the most sense.

Please enlighten us. Which of Rand Paul’s ideas do you think makes the most sense, and why? Please be as specific as possible.

“Throwing rocks at specific Rep Cons and taking undefined pokes at Dem Libs as a group …….Who get gets your mud? ……….Respectful(?) Troll’s Trick #812 to display yourself as an Independent.”

You couldn’t refute his post with logic or fact, so you responded with a personal attack. How droll.

Regarding Respectful Troll: he has many times asserted that he is a progressive. To my mind, what’s more important is that he is willing to think things through, and see the difference between the value and the crap. I try to do the same. He has noticed the same thing that I do: Democrats are disorganized and have priorities that are all over the map. Republicans, however, march in lockstep to whatever ideas the leadership provides, and many of those are based more on gaining power than serving their constituents. If Democrats were more to the left, as they used to be, and Republicans were also far more to the left, as THEY used to be, I have a feeling he would be more generous to Republicans. I know I would.

And here is why you should re-think your support:

I like his idea for Medicare, but if he wants to give seniors a plan as good as that of the members of Congress, the country will go broke in a week and a half. Better idea is to make members of Congress find insurance on their own, like the rest of us.

Foreign aid is a huge subject. I pass for now.

Every time we privatize, bad things happen. Look at how many judges are now serving time for taking bribes for funneling youths into private jails. Better idea for TSA is to find a way to control its absurd excesses.

ANWR will suffer as a result of exploration. There WILL be an accident, and in that remote area, it could be a while before it is found. Also, even the Bush administration noted it would not benefit us monetarily until at least 2035, if then.

The Keystone Pipeline is a sham. We gain nothing. Canada and China gain. Even though Mr. Romney promised that it would provide “millions” of jobs, it is likely to provide maybe 1000, and most of those will work for Trans-Canada, and will not be US jobs. The only US jobs will be for maintenance, and those folks in Arkansas whose neighborhoods were ruined by the same nasty tar oil that the Keystone pipeline can tell you how awful it is. And what have we learned about the “clean-up”? Our liberal tree-hugging press has told us nothing. But we know about Jody Arias, don’t we? Think about that next time you characterize the priorities of the press.

Remember the Keystone pipeline will cross a huge aquifer. Remember that the midwest farmers depend on that aquifer, especially during times of drought. Remember that if the water spoils, crops will die. Remember, finally, that you cannot eat money.

Other than that, Rand’s my man.

I’m fiscally conservative and have read much of Paul’s budget. That budget doesn’t fall under the category of making sense. It falls under the category of political posturing.

I voted for Ron Paul in the R primaries here. Shame he didn’t get more votes from the R’s. Or respect at the convention.

Hello Ansonia, if you click my avatar and look at my profile, it is immediately apparent I favor issues favored by progressives and generally by liberals. I never said I was nonpartisan.
My position can be described thusly….
We are all traveling on nine lanes that are merging into one single lane of traffic and in order to move ahead, we have to work together in whatever way we can. Letting people merge in front of us and finding someone to let us merge in is hard even in regular traffic on actual roads. When the road is made up of all the many issues confronting us, it’s even worse.
Our nation is in a massive traffic jam. People are refusing to let anyone they don’t agree with move ahead if it means they have to move aside. We’re going nowhere.
I am willing compromise and to make room for other ideas. That willingness to compromise is rare in people and non existent in Congress, not in either party.
How can you have an intelligent debate with people if they feel you are deceiving them?
    It makes no sense.

Ron Paul had the occasional viable idea, but was, and is, a bit of a nut.

Rand Paul only has the “nut” part down pat. While I thought it was cool he actually stood on the floor and followed the rules for “filibuster” as they should be, it’s the only rational thing he’s done.

Perfect, we now have a defense for narrowing worldview.

    It saves time.

The joys that I feel of this revelation can only be matched by watching kittens thrown into a wood shredder.

Then again at least you aren’t a hypocrite and in the act of doublethink immediately go back to ranting buzzwords

Thanks for your comments. Since I posted, I caught up on some reading. The House last week passed a bill to approve the Keystone pipeline, 241 to 175. Democrats proposed an amendment to prohibit export of that oil. I suppose the rationale was that if we transport it, we should be able to use it. I’m not sure we have the legal standing to make a private company sell their product here and only here. Regardless, it failed 162-255. Another amendment was proposed to require firms receiving tar-sands crude via Keystone pipeline to pay into the oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, just as other Oil companies must pay a per-gallon fee into the fund. (Interestingly, Exxon was exempted from paying into that fund for the pipeline going through Arkansas. Good luck finding money to clean that up.) It failed 194-233. And lastly, an amendment designed to achieve neutrality on carbon emissions with offsets failed 146-269.

So, to review: pipeline, yes. Getting benefit of using the oil, no. Getting someone to pay into a fund to clean up the eventual spill, no. Reducing pollution to make this a carbon-neutral project, no.

You’re a smart person. I’m sure your conclusions will be valid.
