I wonder if this was what Alexander Hamilton envisioned? I know its not what George Washington wanted. His writings are pretty clear on that.
I saw a poll the other day showing Obama ahead in the electoral votes but behind in the popular vote. I do not want a president who wins because of the electoral college. It doesn’t seem right. I understand the electoral college gives more influence to states with populations less than some cities, but it just doesn’t feel right. Churchhill was right, “Democracy is the worst form of government except for everything that has preceded it.” (probably butchered the quote)
If we ever get a truly bipartisan legislature, maybe we can improve it.

Kevin, you are right — my vote for democrats never counts because I am in a red state. “We the people” don’t elect our president.

Well, i believe the quote ends in simply “…except everything else”. And the thing with electoral vs. popular: what about GWB, twice if memory serves? Last point: I’m skeptical of all polls now, they are all slanted one way of another, even the “polls of polls” (or averages) are different on MSNBC and Fox. Forget about polls, wait until election day, the only poll that counts. And I can only HOPE that both sides STFU for at least a WEEK until the campaign 2016 starts…

The electoral college and 2 senators/state are the results of a compromise. The big states got a federal government and the small states got a small measure of limitation. If you wish to eliminate the electoral college, fine with me. Just end the big powerful federal government and allow the states to control their own destiny.
Oh, that you don’t want that, just the other half of your compromise. What is yours is mine and what is mine is mine.

Ever since I was old enough to know anything about politics, I haven’t figured why they don’t get rid of the electoral college. It seems out-dated and unfair to individual voters. Not sure who wants to keep it or why.

There have been people who have tried to remove it (like my own Senator, Nelson), but was voted down by the majority.

Next year is also going to be an election year for some Congressmen/women. Perhaps We the People should call for a nationwide Amendment to get rid of it, or we vote the all the incumbents out….

the electoral college was a compromise that gives far more power to the majority individual voters in smaller states. hence a voter in wyoming has far more power than a voter in californa. This was a necessary compromise to induce the less populous states to join the union (<- i know, ‘UNION’ like "LIBERAL’ is a dirty word according to rush).
if you attempt to eliminate the electoral college (fine by me – a NY’r), you’ll find the least populous states won’t go along with it as they don’t want their power, as states, reduced. Now in a few elections, last nights being one of them, the outcome is somewhat ironic. Actually the irony was in the gore/bush election. a smaller popular vote in small states carries more weight than the same popular vote in large states per person. So in the gore/bush election the red states were able to apply more power than their population allowed thereby keeping the US in the 20th century 4 years too long. the teaparty kept us from moving forward as quickly as we could have for another 4 years. hopefully that is over with now.
