    The one that bugs me is “The France.” Even the French get that wrong.

    ^Hmm, compare France’s actions in Southeast Asia and Africa, to Russia’s relationship to Ukraine and Crimea. Who were the oppressors, and who did we support, for decades, even costing 58,000+American lives? Even Russia was our “buddy” when bailing France out when they surrendered to Germany.

    Good, but not original. Holbert did a Winnie the Putin after the Russian invasion of Georgia and a couple of follow-ons after that.

    In French, all nouns have articles, mainly to indicate gender.

    @Francis Lapeyre

    Well, that was the joke. Some languages use articles more than others. (Some don’t even have articles — Latin has gender, but no articles.) French uses articles more than English does. A famous example is Sartre’s autobiography; in French the title is “Les Mots”, but the proper translation into English is just “Words”, rather than “The Words.” So the French call France “La France”. So that was the basis for the joke. Explaining jokes can be difficult, and in a way if you don’t get it there’s no point explaining it, but partly I was suggesting (as a joke) that if you object to “The Ukraine” then you should object to “La France”, even though that’s what the French say, and partly I was suggesting that the French don’t know how to speak French (again, as a joke), and partly I was pretending to be stupid enough to think that the French ought to speak French as if it were English…. Anyway, it was a joke.

    After this being up a few days, came to think, how many honey pots do you think Cheney had his hand in?

    Another “but, but, but Boooosh” post? You’re aware that Obama uses Halliburton exclusively in Afghanistan (“the right war”) and that Cheney devolved himself of any profits, any future profits going to a charity, right?

    The indefinite article is sometimes also used as a collectivizing device. It gives a layer of indirection to the thing to which you refer.. “Yucatan” is something your might use to describe the area when you are only referring to a specific part of it, but “The Yucatan” refers to the entire area as a unit.

    Putin’s complexion here seems to be an indicator of the ravages of going to the dark side — much like the face of the Star Wars emperor.
