   I don’t understand why we should care about consenting adults having sex however they want. Military, congress, the president. I don’t care. I’d rather that their personal lives not be put under the microscope so that we’re able to attract more candidates for the job besides people whose lives are so boring they will pass a morality litmus test.

   Back in the early 1900s, Sen. Reid Smoot, duly elected to represent Utah, was denied his seat by Congress because he was a practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, that is the Mormons. Congress refused to believe that a Mormon could be elected without a rigged election, and further subscribed to numerous conspiracy theories about the church.

   The Smoot Hearings went on for a full three years, during which Congress tried everything it could think of to keep Smoot from taking his seat.

   In the end, it was determined that Smoot was cleaner than most of the people who were sitting in Congress at the time. The little bit of dirt that they could find was found on other people, people who the church swiftly and certainly punished.

   In response to this, one of the few Congressmen to be on Smoot’s side of the matter made the following observation:

   “I’d rather a polygamist who doesn’t polyg than a monogamist who doesn’t monog.”

   I have yet to see an American history textbook that mentions the Smoot Hearings or their impact on the American political landscape.

    Naïvely suppose some young persons, desperate to keep their jobs in this economy, are ‘offered’ a chance to have sex with the boss, so they agree and pretend to like it, pretend it was better than what Ana had with Christian Grey. Is that coercive, or just a great career opportunity?

    
    And be sure to get the opinion of the Italian chef who came to Ellis Island with the name J. Grabbaherquick, but the immigration officer shortened it to J. Caesar. (I understand, in addition to sleeping with his boss, he also invented a great salad.)

    Consent is consent. Power corrupts, right. Pedophiles in Congress have been Republicans, in the Church, they were named Haggard, not “father”. Sexual misconduct crosses so many lines, there don’t seem to be any. BUT, indeed when it comes to consenting adults, it should be nobodies business but to them and their families.

    Well, the Republicans have a new standard-bearer with the anti-abortion Congressman who had his ex-wife have 2 abortions, asked one of his patients, with whom he was sleeping, have another, and slept with yet more patients. And he just got re-elected and still has his medical license.
