I keep getting told that humanity is one big family, but Warren Buffett still won’t give me an allowance.

I’m 55, I don’t know anyone who appoints godparents, and I’ve never knowingly met a godparent. Does this still exist?

I’m a god mother to my best friend’s kid. The basic definition: A godparent, in many denominations of Christianity, is someone who sponsors a child’s baptism. Today, the word godparent might not have explicitly religious overtones. The secular view of a godparent tends to be an individual chosen by the parents to take an interest in the child’s upbringing and personal development. While I wasn’t there for the baptismal – being station overseas – I am one of the people that the mother asked to be responsible for the upbringing of her child, should she pass before her child is an adult.

Having a godparent to your child or being one to the child of another person, makes you both co-parents, compadres (co-fathers) or comadres (co-mothers).

    scretwitch,
that’s pretty much the definition I got from an episode of “Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman”. A good safety net for kids if the parents become disabled, imprisoned or should both perish in some kind of accident, etc.

Hubby and I were godparents to my girlfriend’s son and his oldest friend’s daughter. Now that they’re both grown and he’s passed away, don’t feel the onus of being responsible for either.

I chose my own godmother, who has passed away some 30 years ago, that was my bff’s mother. We didn’t meet until I was already grown. She was a great inspiration to me, helped me cope with life’s ups and downs, boosted my low self-esteem, attended my wedding as the mother of the bride when my step-mother chose not attend. She was a God send. So, as an only child I refer to my bff as godsister and her kids call me aunt. This might sound silly to some but, it made me feel better

“Grandgodparent”??? That is so much worse than people who refer to their freinds as aunt and uncle to their kids.
