In Soylent Green they used garbage trucks to suppress the riots. Not so macho but maybe effective…

The problem with any special equipment and training is once in place, it has to be justified. They are like large databases, “it’s there, what can we do with it?”

Yes. Part of the deal was if they don’t USE the mine-resistant troop carriers in a year, they lose it. Talk about bad influences!

Anybody consider how effective a rotary snow plow can be on dispersing a mob?

Anyone familiarwith the Stanford Prison Experiment? Conclusions of it are that you can give any group of people a police or prison guard uniform and a baton, some authority and you have the recipe for monsters.

…what happens when you give them tanks?

Years ago MIT ran an experiment that had ordinary people giving electrical shocks to strangers. The shocks were increasingly severe and as long as the calm guy in the white coat approved, they kept giving the shocks. The “victims” were actors, displaying increasing levels of pain and in one case, a heart attack. But the ordinary people kept pushing the button. No wonder the aliens have us in quarantine.

My Lai wasn’t an experiment, it was field application. Kent State you don’t give idiots loaded weapons. The B of A bank robbers in L.A. proved there ARE still two sides to the argument, at least. But I still don’t think “rank and file” police organizations need armored vehicles, and hiding their identities with body armor and balaclavas is a BAD idea.

If anyone is interested in Cynthia and dzw’s references, Google Phillip Zimbardo and Stanley Milgram. Those studies explain much about Ferguson.
