bueller, this has a beautiful, soft-toned water color look … it’s nice … how did you do it?

Who’s Bueller?

Nice that this was well received. Thanks!
BCS asked about the medium the cartoon was done in. Most of my editorial cartoons are b&w ink on paper, with Duo Shade once in a while. That stuff is getting scarce so I ration it. This cartoon was painted with watercolor, and lettered as usual with ink.
As far as color on the editorial page, my paper tends to
usually reserve that for use as requested, which turns out
to be perhaps six or seven times a year. The rest of the paper has plenty of color positions, though - section fronts,
photos, etc.
Most of the color work I do for the Democrat-Gazette is for
the Sunday Perspective page illustration, which I paint
weekly. Once in a while i’ll switch to a sculpted clay relief illustration to vary the look of the Perspective
page.
.
I should add color to more of my editorial cartoons, even if
I wind up doing a color version for the web only.I still like to paint them,
rather than coloring them in Photoshop. Not sure what method
Jim Morin uses for his color cartoons, but I like the effect.

^Bueller, hey, water color, I was right! it’s nicely done. If you’re interested, Ramsey did a nice toon today that has a water color look to it too, though i don’t think it is water color. It looks more dense, less diffused.
Morin’s color toons have a smudged look to the black ink (if that’s what it is) almost like a dark charcoal. But, FWIW, bueller, I like your water color look on this one better.

Really great image by our man Bueller.

Ramsey did a fine job with his 9/11 tribute. The convincing way he
rendered the water and reflections helped convey the idea of something lost but not forgotten.

notice how the rubble of the towers or an entire desert can be spoken with just a few strokes -
that’s because those are the supporting actors in the statement - without them, of course, it’s empty. the primary actors are the men (and women?) with their thoughts and the thoughts themselves
you can see how an artist can power up the statement

Freedom is preserved by due vigilance.
The Freedom we enjoy today (or better yet what is left of it) was bought by the blood of many and is preserved with the blood of many.
Sadly, we have long forgotten this and gladly sell our power out to the politicians in exchange for the fish bait they wave in front of our faces.

Waving fish bait! Exchanging our faces! Forgotten power politicians! Rah, rah! You tell ‘em, David!

David I believe the term you are looking for is Democratic Republic, ergo our system of government.
