Joel Pett is a three-time finalist for Pulitzer Prize for cartooning. He won the award in 2000. He joined Lexington Herald-Leader in 1984 and USAToday as contributing cartoonist in 2002.

I think if you open your eyes, you will see that a great many people are living lives of true desperation, that they are dying needlessly, and that it is no artificial creation designed to boost ratings.
If anything, and I think this is what Pett is saying, cable news focusses on less meaningful things (like celebrity divorces, celebrity murders) to avoid looking at the real pain and suffering in the world.
As for swine flu (H1N1), the Red Cross has stated how worried it is because pandemic flues like this often come in relatively weak in the spring, then return in the fall in a much deadlier form (like the flu of 1918 that killed millions).

Everything is relative and a lot of our time is spent avoiding the thoughts of all the suffering in this world. I’m currently recovering from the flu and it is not as bad as some I have had but it’s no cakewalk, either.
