You forgot to remind everyone that OBAMA IS COMING TO TAKE YOUR GUNS!

Since congress is looking in the wrong direction to prevent gun violence, there will be more.

In a civilized nation, a truly civilized nation, children should be able to grow up without unreasonable fears. They should be able to learn and play in and environment where they aren’t afraid that the adults in their lives will be unable to protect them, or worse, might harm them. I was fortunate to live in civilized communities where natural disasters were the only threats and bad things happened in big cities where children sometimes were shot by accident. Then I learned that sometimes, children were killed by their own parents in my own home town, and the deaths were always ‘accidental’.
Children learn as they live, and if you do not raise a generation of children who have a sense of loyalty and belonging to their society, then they will become adults who will vote away your health care, and when you turn a certain age, you won’t be allowed medical care if you can’t afford it.
If you don’t care for them, why should they care for us?

Many countries with more gun controls have less gun crime. How does that fit into your equation?
Socialist are not coming after your guns, anyway. This is a fantasy, not a real threat.

Your all a bunch of bone heads! We should use commons sense and have a license process that requires training in the the weapon system the person want to have, just like cars, trucks, heavy equipment. Plus that allows a evaluation that the person applying is not mentally incompetent. Then to own you have to have insurance in case the owner ends up being a negligent bone head. This will allow the market to help in determine where a loss is likely to happen. Companies won’t insure someone who appears to be a risk. This would leave us with a private/government partnership that you qualify in training allows you to operate that weapon system and you can own any weapon system you have a licence for and can get insured for, barring military level weapon systems.

Think about it, would you want a well intended neighbor to have a semi truck drive it around your neighborhood with kids in the street who has never had training in operating one and is uninsured? How about an AR-15?

Hmmm, it’s obvious first off, that all deer are SOCIALISTS, and therefore, MUST DIE!

But to the point: EVERY “test” of what would happen if more guns were in classrooms, even held by trained police officers, has proven the death and injury toll would INCREASE DRAMATICALLY!

Hmm, as to the being shot thing: after the initial shock wears off, it hurts like Hell!!! People shot do NOT lie calmly back and ask for a cigarette, and talk philosophically about the use of firearms. (My own experience was actually only when my brother, the jerk, shot me in the buttock with a .22 short, and it hit my wallet first, so didn’t do as much damage as it could, but, JEES it HURT!) I treated many people years later with far more serious injuries, so was sympathetic!

and finally: regulation is NOT confiscation. I firmly believe all persons acquiring firearms should first have to pass a review at least as thorough as my state’s concealed carry permit: background check-thorough, proof you’ve learned the ETHICAL use of firearms and the law, and shown at least some level of proficiency with weapons. And yes, LICENSE firearms owners, as New Zealand does, with “options” for registering weapons, so they can be traced, and owners will be more careful about who has access to those weapons, and will report if they are “stolen”.

Speaking from the left, I have no desire to deprive people of reasonable gun ownership. Hunters should be able to hunt, people who shoot for sport should be able to do that, people should be able to have guns in their homes for protection (though they would be wise not to, but that should be their choice).

Sorry, ma’am. States with fewer gun laws have higher rates of gun violence. Big cities have problems with gangs. Cities that are in or near states with fewer gun laws have bigger problems with gun violence. If you take the gang shootings out of the equation, most of the ‘liberal’ cities have very low rates of gun violence.

Closing the loopholes in background checks so that straw buyers can’t bring guns to cities won’t harm your freedom, but it would help limit the collateral damage in big cities.

Most guns used in gang shootings in Chicago come from outside the state of Illinois.

    @ Deerflatener
Columbine and the Aurora Theater come to mind; not many restrictions on guns in Colorado. Guns are a normal part of the communities and are used in hunting and multiple gun ranges.

Actually, I have spoken for the left. Back in 1967-68, I was a spokesperson for the anti-war movement, and then again in the early 1980s for a couple of years I was a spokesperson for the nuclear disarmament groups.

^lonecat: thumbs up! BTW, does being an elected representative on “the left”, and helping to write the party platform on several issues count as being a “spokesperson”? But I still prefer to be recognized as representing my own assessment based on issue facts, and trying to educate folks on what those facts are.

Given D.C. Navy yard this morning, “going school” or “going military installation”, may finally have replaced “going postal”??

NO law is going to stop violence. You have to get tougher with the criminals and make mental health care accessible for the mentally ill—instead of having the receptionist stopping them and asking them for their health insurance cards!

Actually, what no one else appears to have commented on is with all the time spent on (safety) drills, how much time is being spent on education/al (drills/memorization)? Oops, forgot that teaching Joseph that 2+2=4 isn’t as important as telling him that the mere fact that he got an answer to the question is of higher priority. And, if he learned it in a group (i.e., non-repeatable learning), so much the better…..
