And we have what, 100 private militia members in the US? A real threat.
motivemagus said, 2 months ago
GNW, I think in part they’re referring to the high number of Americans who own some sort of gun. According to Reuters:
The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, said a report in 2007.
U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world’s 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.
About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.
Of course, it could be the teabaggers, but most of them seem not to be armed…

Guns don’t kill people, bullets do, and they are fired by too many people who should NOT have easy or unfettered access to guns.
The real problem is we may have more outright whackos than Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran, combined.

I always love it when I see video of jubilant fadadis in the street firing their AKs straight up. I hope those falling rounds do no damage to innocents.

And people don’t kill people.
But people with guns kill a lot of people.

Oswald - I think that they developed their own society over the centuries.
MGus- interesting figures. Maybe if anyone tries to overthrow the US, they will find as big a struggle as the US did in Bagdad. Sorry , but what is the referrence to “teabaggers?” I only know of a form of hazing by that term.
Demented Canuck - Maybe you are too young to remember, but people do kill people. Ever hear of the holocaust? It was some nastiness several decades ago in Europe. I understand that more recently than that, large jet planes were used as weapons to slaughter thousands of innocent civilians, gee I can’t remember where. Or, if you want to be more romantic, watch a “Halloween” or “Friday the 13th” movie, or an old episode of Columbo. Many imaginative ways to snuff a life there.
Mama Trout - no, bullets are also inanimate objects. Sorry.
People kill people, and shooting, stabbing, bludgeoning, strangling, drugging, drowning, running over, hanging, electocuting, and cement overshoes will all accomplish the task. Anyone else have interesting methods I couldn’t think of?

Howdy y’all . I’m new here as member . It’s fun to read all the comments . It’s like a value added to all the comics for me .
In contrast to Afghanistan , we’ve got what ? Women’s right’s , relatively effective law enforcement , comprehensive infrastructure , and the highest GDP in the world . (although a tiny portion holds the lions share of the monetary wealth )
Hmmmm … what else ? Oh ! White Castle ! We’ve got White Castle ! Woot ! Woot !

Loco: You back up your arguments with “evidence” from fictional television shows?
(good grief!)
And, yes, the people who caused the Holocaust carried a lot of guns. Thank you for proving my point.

And the people who carried guns easily slaughtered those who didn’t carry guns. It would not have been so easy if the oppressed could actually fight back.
In the lower 48 (below Canada) those states with the highest murder rates are the states that ban guns and those what allow guns have the lower murder rates.

1 murder rate in US/100,000 population Detroit
2 murder rate in US Baltimore
Then Newark, St. Louis DC
Try and buy a legal gun anywhere in Michigan and of course DC is the source of the Heller decision.

Bumpers: GNWack-o has a long history of making up facts on the spur of the moment to support his preconceptions. And it’s no good asking him to support his views; he will give a few partial statistics out of context (see above) or quickly change the subject (see above).

A neat burger joint…there aren’t that many of ‘em left, but you’d get a sack of these itty bitty burgers with a bit of chopped onion and a splash of catsup that you could wolf down in about one or two bites. (From my misspent youth)

Demented Canuck, I bludgeoned you to death with logic, then tried to interject a little humor so that you wouldn’t feel stupid. “People don’t kill people.” That could be the most stupid statement ever made in the history of mankind. I tried to give you an out, but if you choose to wallow in stupidity, enjoy.
Do you want to go back farther in history? The Romans, perhaps, killed a man or two. Maybe by accident. How about the Spartans? How about the Trojans? Maybe the Babylonians? More recent history might show the Huns. How about beheading, disembowling, or burning at the stake?
Current times? How about the gang that came across a 12 year-old boyscout walking through an empty field on his way to a meeting outside of Youngstown a few years ago. They beat him, stripped him, shoved a broomstick up his rectum as far as it would go until it finally broke off, then doused him in lighter fluid, ignighted him, and laughted at him until he died. Now do you feel better?

loco, what a disturbing story! I recently watched a flick called “An American Crime” because one of the actresses was nominated for awards for her role. It was based on a true story in 1965. I’m so sorry I watched it. It wasn’t graphically violent, in fact, it was very understated. But just knowing it actually happened, that people could be that cruel, was so disturbing I had difficulty sleeping. Your story is the same kind of thing.
DrCanuck said, 2 months ago
Well, I certainly don’t feel any better, Loco, wasting time arguing with a bozo about minutiae; but you seem to be enjoying the heck out of wallowing in violence.
Eeeewwwww!

I looked at your reference, GNW; also went here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_the_United_States. I will look at the spreadsheet you can download from the FBI, but I warn you that this is very slippery data, and can be argued a variety of ways – none simply.

Please explain something to me. Article says there is a high level of firearms used by criminals. Quite true. But that is already expressly against the law. Why will passing more laws make criminals give up their guns? makes no sense. We are totally unable to enforce the laws already on the books. The only people who suffer are the law abiding. Makes no sense.

That boy scout should of had a Gun. You know what they say ” Be Prepared ”
motivemagus said, 2 months ago
GNW, I know that argument; it’s one of the NRA’s favorites. But I think it is more complex than that. The NRA favors higher criminal penalties for crimes committed with guns rather than without. I’m fine with that. There are also “gun exchange” programs that seem to at least collect the extras, and we should do that more, too. But tell me why they don’t want trigger locks or gun registration, or even forbid purchase to ex-cons? That doesn’t harm the law-abiding, and it does reduce the number of criminals buying guns, by reducing the number of channels available to them. Why not forbid unlicensed weapons, and allow police (with appropriate search warrant) to confiscate unlicensed weapons whenever found? Why not close the “gun show” loophole that allows people to buy there with virtually no oversight? That isn’t logical, unless you take as a given the idea that the NRA doesn’t want anyone to have a barrier to purchasing a gun. In other words, they would rather have criminals acquire guns than in any way inconvenience citizens while buying a gun. And I think that is closer to the truth. They really don’t want any oversight on buying guns. Too bad they don’t believe in the First Amendment as strongly as the second.
But putting that aside, remember that the vast majority of handgun deaths in this country are caused not by criminals but by legal owners who shoot themselves or their family members by accident or design. Our death rate for handguns is orders of magnitude greater than any other industrialized nation. The NRA says that people should not use a gun without proper training – which reminds me of beer commercials which celebrate parties with booze but say “please drink responsibly.” It’s merely a warning that protects them from litigation. Because in truth the NRA would support no law requiring training before buying a handgun, either, I suspect.

You say my argument is similar to that given by the NRA. I am not a member so am not familiar with their proposals.
I do have a comment on your suggestions. Unfortunately they are blatantly unconstitutional. The second amendment says Americans have RKBA. There is absolutely nothing about registration and I am totally opposed to giving the federal government a list of every American who owns a gun. Just like I oppose giving the Federal government a list of everyone who owns a printing press or a computer or which church they belong to.
We now have a Supreme Court guideline (Heller) which I will be happy to follow. Everyone may own a hand gun except… Mentally ill, felons, etc. The default has to be yes. Just like the default for free speech is yes.
Your position is one commonly espoused by other gun control advocates. Your problem is it runs directly counter not only to the words but the purpose of the Bill of Rights. I will say the same thing to you as I do to my friends who oppose abortion. If you don’t like it, amend the Constitution. There is no longer a debate, just read Heller.
motivemagus said, 2 months ago
GNW, seems to me that the Second Amendment gets special treatment. No one seems to question that the First Amendment has limits, when it comes to things like obscenity – why should the Second have no limits at all?
And I don’t really think all my suggestions are “blatantly unconstitutional” - the Constitution doesn’t say anything about licensing, tracking, trigger locks, or gun shows. Not to mention the difference between Revolutionary War era muskets and automatic weapons. And as you should know, the language makes it clear that it was intended for volunteer militia. So the “it ain’t Constitutional” argument is a bit specious. It depends on how you – wait for it – interpret the Constitution. You and Heller are interpreting it a specific way.
And if the NRA is going to continue to say that criminals with guns are the reasons to have guns without any approach to stopping criminals with guns, I’d like to them to just come out and say that 10,000 dead Americans a year (roughly the average handgun death rate – mostly suicides and accidents, last I heard) is an acceptable price to them to make it easy for anyone - INCLUDING criminals - to get a gun.
There will always be a debate.

The 1st Amendment by Supreme Court ruling may be modified by “time, place or manner”.
The 2nd Amendment by Supreme Court ruling may be modified by insanity, felon, and location et al. See Heller. Only reasonable regulations are permissible.
When people discuss Obama the correct answer is he is the President of all the American people, whether or not you voted for him.
Heller is your law, whether you support it or not. We previously discussed “militia” and that has been once and for all permanently settled. Nothing to be gained by our debate. It is not expositive.
50,000 people die a year from automobiles and anybody can get a license.
motivemagus said, 2 months ago
Yes, I know all that, GNW - doesn’t stop me kvetching about it! That’s my First Amendment right…
And to your point on cars (I anticipated that) - the laws for driver licenses are far stricter than gun licensing in many states, and you yourself seem to be against that.

1st paragraph. Well said. I agree that is indeed the right of thinking Americans on both sides.
Of course there is no 28th Amendment saying we have the right to keep and bear autos. That we may regulate the heck out of but not the constitution.
