Can’t happen. Goofy mouth is in Joe’s DNA, he’s been doing it his whole political career. Today he basically said banning AR’s wasn’t as big a deal as the high cap mag issue and background checks on gun shows. I’m sure the White House was ready to throttle him…

Since we’re talking about guns, I know many of you will enjoy this quote, while others of course will hate it. It’s entertaining to say the least.

“A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity”.
    Sigmund Freud,
    “General Introduction to Psychoanalysis”

    Sigmund Freud,

This from the same man who figured women had penis envy, because he couldn’t accept the fact that so many of his female patients had been molested by their fathers! Freud is a fraud.

Let Joe be Joe. He is more man and human than most people I ever met. Remember what happened to that “reporter” who called Buzz Aldrin an liar? Didn’t get to finish his sentence on account of Buzz having planted his fist in the guys visage. Joe would have done exactly the same, no doubt in my mind. Great guy, great VP, 12 more years!

The first problem is, Freud didn’t say that, Kates did.

    From Wikiquote:

    Quote
“A fear of… weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.”

This is not a statement that appears in any translation of any of Freud’s works. It is a paraphrase of a statement from the essay “Guns, Murders, and the Constitution” (February 1990) by Don B. Kates, Jr. where Kates summarizes his views of passages in Dreams in Folklore (1958) by Freud and David E. Oppenheim, while disputing statements by Emmanuel Tanay in “Neurotic Attachment to Guns” in a 1976 edition of The Fifty Minute Hour: A Collection of True Psychoanalytic Tales (1955) by Robert Mitchell Lindner: Dr. Tanay is perhaps unaware of — in any event, he does not cite — other passages more relevant to his argument. In these other passages Freud associates retarded sexual and emotional development not with gun ownership, but with fear and loathing of weapons. The probative importance that ought to be attached to the views of Freud is, of course, a matter of opinion. The point here is only that those views provide no support for the penis theory of gun ownership.

Due to misreading of this essay and its citations, this paraphrase of an opinion about Freud’s ideas has been wrongly attributed to Freud himself, and specifically to his 10th Lecture “Symbolism in Dreams” in General Introduction to Psychoanalysis on some internet forum pages: alt.quotations, uk.politics.guns, talk.politics.guns, can.talk.guns , etc.

Thanks, Bill. But I bet we’ll find this same passage attributed to Freud a few times over the next week.

Okay, I stand corrected. I saw it late in the evening and didn’t spend a lot of time researching it. I just thought it was mildly humorous.

    ’Way to go, Bill.

Freud spent a lot of time speculating on guns as symbollic penis substitutions, the loud and powerful firing as ejacuations, the compensation of fear of impotency by the collection and hoarding of guns (the larger, the better). So an over-concern with guns is a sign of sexual immaturity and of not successfully resolving the Oedipal Complex of childhood.

However, to know Freud, you also know he always covers his butt, so he postulates that people who are AFRAID of guns may also collect and hoard them as ways of dealing with those fears.

So both fear and immaturity are the same thing and both manifest in gun collection, emphatic rejection of guns, or loud and aggressive arguments both for and against guns. In short, if it’s an issue either way, you have sexual problems.
