And it’s pretty good evidence why we need to stop talking about arming Syrian rebels, when we don’t know who’s who, just like when we armed the “good guys” in Afghanistan, and lost control of the situation.

Some folks are slow learners. (Russians too, folks.)

The best evidence against Russia is the resignation of a reporter hired to help write the case for the Russian defence. She said the truth of Russia’s guilt was obvious, and she could not continue to help produce the stories that tried to deny it.

(Of course, the source for her resignation was a formerly left-wing UK newspaper that had its offices raided and its computers smashed for not towing the official UK government line, so they MIGHT not be entirely reliable.)

Someone posted a link to a June 29 article in ITAR-TASS “Donetsk defence forces take control of army unit equipped with missile defence systems”. Some have said this was an attempt to make it seem as if Russia was not the primary cause of the shooting down of the airliner, by showing, even before the shooting, that the Eastern Ukrainians had captured the BUK SAM battery from the Ukrainian military, and had not received it from Russia. If so, it shows the shooting down of the airliner was premeditated, with the defence prepared before the actual shooting.

Others have said Russia gave some of the drunken militants the SAM battery, and they shot down the airliner by mistake, so the official Russian News ITAR-TASS published the article presciently. Darn clever, these Russkies is all I can say.

It’s amazing how different the coverage is for this than the USS Vincennes, which shot down a passenger aircraft in 1988.

Those “Ukrainian separatists” are Russian soldiers incognito. So the whole thing just blew up in Putin’s lap. However it has yet to be seen if anything will come of it.

    “Toeing” the line.

That’s all; just a spelling/usage note. (I only give them when there’s a chance of the user learning from it.)

If you recall the Vicennes was engaged in combat operations against Iranian Patrol boats at the time and the Iranian Airbus was not squawking the proper IFF codes. This was also just a year and two months following the Iraqi Exocet missile attack on the USS Stark FFG-31. You can read the DoD report here:

There was a comment on an NY Times article today saying that we should arm the Ukraine military “like we did the mujahideen when we had to stop the Soviet advance into Afghanistan”.
Obviously that commenter forgot how that little ploy turned out.

Every time I see that one I remember a word usage book (the entertaining kind, for nerds like me) that started a chapter with an illustration – a line drawing – of a tow truck hooked up to . . . a line – “towing the line.” :-)

But, wait, there’s more! The first one hundred disaffected rebel groups that place their orders will receive, free of charge, “I love Putin” patches, color coordinated to go along with their green camo-outfits!

This is the first Sorensen cartoon I’ve been seriously disappointed in as regards her political stance on an issue. It shows a serious over consumption of U.S. propaganda (as do the bigoted comments above) and an utter lack of information regarding the non-U.S./NATO view of how the U.S. promoted a fascist coup in Kiev leading to the tragic downing of a civilian airliner by a missile system which the fascists in Kiev have in large numbers and of which the anti-fascist rebels in the Donbass do not have at all.
