    But I thought it was bad the last few years because the cost of houses was dropping? Shouldn’t two people bidding on a house make the cost go up? Isn’t this a good thing?

    @Ms. Ima

    I suppose you missed all the stories of banks trying to foreclose on homes when they couldn’t even prove they had a claim… or, like Bank of America, when the home wasn’t even mortgaged.

    “or, like Bank of America, when the home wasn’t even mortgaged.”

    Funny story. The bank sent a foreclosure notice to a couple who had bought their house for cash, and tried to evict them. The couple sued, and the judge found for them and awarded them damages, which the bank did not pay. The couple sent a few notices, which were ignored. So they called the Sheriff’s Department, and initiated foreclosure proceedings on the bank. When the bank manager was presented with the papers, the damages were paid.

    not true. besides the above anecdotes, non-payment of property taxes can lead to foreclosure (or worse, auction) on houses with no mortgage.
