He’ll get his first taste of reality when he gets to the front of the line and finds that his degree in comparative literature isn’t considered useful in the business world. He should have done a double major.

It never helped me that way. It was something for HR interviewers to say when they don’t want you: well, you don’t have a degree… (They think of something else if you do have one.)

    @mikefive

How’d you figure that he has a degree in comparative literature?

“And the last thing he would want to take is economics 101, that would make him one of those evil bankers or loan people who gave him the money to go to college.”

Last I checked bankers don’t give you money, they LOAN you money at astronomical rates. And you HAVE to pay it back. Bankruptcy won’t help with student loans.

Just to be serious for a moment, is employment the only reason to get an education? Sure, it’s good to have a marketable skill; there’s a whole range of skills out there, from fixing cars to building bridges, and everything else. But isn’t there some value in knowing about what human beings have thought and created over the years? I would say that there’s room for both kinds of education.

I was a math major with a minor in reality. At mid point reality became my major and I had to seek gainful employment. I’ve worn a lot of hats over the years. Math was important to all of them. So was reality.

My daughter (oldest) owns and operates 2 small business ventures. My youngest daughter teaches in the Florida school system after obtaining a “liberal arts” education. One is super conservative one an uber liberal. You decide which is which.

WE all eat, drink, laugh and enjoy each other when we gather together as we celebrate our differences as well as our similarities.

    love is all you need.

I agree that you need love, but I’m not sure it’s all you need.

LOL. You think? How do you explain me? I’m not “liberal” but “Libertarian” to some extent. BUT, no degree. Simply a UHK education.

So, if all people had “love of neighbor” in the new testament sense as proscribed by the prophet would we then as a human race have:

war? (can’t love and kill your brother/sister)

theft? (can’t love your brother/sister and take their things)

hunger? (how can you love another and watch them starve)

    hatred?

    murder?

    rape?

    poverty?

But then we have all those things.
