There is a management axiom, taught in Business Schools, ‘measure outputs, not inputs.’

Best dramatised in the film, ‘The Battle of the Sexes’ (1959, starring Peter Sellers, Robert Morley, Constance Cummings, Jameson Clark, et al.)

The CEO of Yahoo strongly resembles the character Angela Barrows, who insisted that workers, instead of working from home, come to the plant and punch a time clock.

Sadly, there’s no Mr Martin around to compete with her for the catbird seat.

    Scary prospect, I admit.

I worked in Vienna instead of in London over a long weekend and no-one noticed (the logs would show where I had VPNed in from but it doesn’t automatically raise a red flag as we have many employees criss-crossing Europe all the time). No-one noticed because all of my work was done as expected. Meh.

I find it much easier to work on-site as opposed to at home. Especially when my wife turns the TV on in the other room and I get sucked into watching “Gunsmoke” reruns…

What the CEO did about telecommuting doesn’t bother me so much; Yahoo is a failing company and she may think she has to take drastic steps to save it.
What DOES bother me, though, is how she once said “the baby’s been easy” and wondered why so many women complain about motherhood. Of course having a baby is easy when you can afford to have a nursery built in your workplace- I guess she can’t empathize with those moms who are struggling to make ends meet.
