Got into Dave Brubeck in high school. Believe it or not, it was learning to follow his complex rhythms under simple melodies that got me into heavy metal music…

Yes, there was about 2 years in my life where I was playing French horn in 2 professional orchestras, Thursdays was guitar in a metal band, and Mondays flugelhorn, trumpet, and tenor sax in a jazz combo. I don’t remember sleeping before 1995…

Good Grief! That’s really blowing your own horn! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist)

I was playing 5/4 at that age, in Bartok’s Microcosmos. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it.

I knew some people who worked with Brubeck, and they all said he was a wonderful guy.

I still have a “best of” CD of his that I play. I had the original LP with “Take Five” on it before the divorce.
