Now, be careful here. This is a high-holy day for Consumerism — America’s preeminent religion. These devout folks are off to worship their gods.

Good point. Black Friday is a religious observance. Consumerists are a fundamentalist sect within the religion of Materialism.
In all seriousness, Philosophical Materialism – a belief that the physical world of Matter & Energy as studied by the Natural Sciences is the full extent of Reality – is the dominant religious belief system (i.e., a belief about religion: it is all hooey.) that competes with Christianity.
Most Americans, whether primarily adherents to one or the other, commit syncretism, allowing the opposing belief to deeply affect them. (e.g., Christians who put for faith in their 401Ks than in their God; Atheists who live on borrowed Christian morality.)
Starting middle of last century, Materialists had their hopes of science being their saviour shaken (A-bomb, pollution, global cooling, then global warming, etc.. e.g., Spaceshuttle Columbia explosion had an impact beyond what was objectively reasonable in terms of lives & treasure lost.) They had already rejected Christianity and started exploring “spirituality” in general.

I’d love to see a Christmas where all the gifts we exchanged might be a can of nuts or a sack of oranges. I’d like to see this religion of materialism come to an end. And I’d like to see “Made in America” labels on most goods—instead of “China.”

That was 20th century. This is the 21st century, so ya, it’s the fight of the century . . .

I’m going to take off a day from work and lose a day’s pay so I can save $100 on a TV. Yeah, that makes sense.
