What sense would it have made to fragment? All these communications networks meant to bring us together seem to emphasize our differences rather than our similarities. It’s extreme rhinoplasty on national levels.
It calls to mind a Kurt Vonnegut Kilgore Trout bogus novel wherein the human race finally achieves immortality and then humans immediately proceed in attempts to kill each other.

It appeared to me that the dream of an independent Scotland was not the people’s but the power brokers of the established government who want to rule themselves and everyone else in Scotland. I bet it would make a good novel if there was an underground hero or group laced into the story who constantly crying foul of the heavy handed ways of the power brokers. Nah, to common.

They were certainly talking about things that happened over a century ago. All of us have ancestors who had bad things happen to them that far back. With five generations to the century, you have 2^(N-1) ancestors per generation, so you’ve got 32 ancestors living 100 years ago, 512 living 200 years ago (in that single respective generation, OFC), 16,000 plus 300 years ago, etc. In that stadium sized crowd, OF COURSE some of them were oppressed. You can’t avoid it. There aren’t that many royals, and even they were related to the French royals that met Dr. Guillotine.
