ahab, I water spray the area under my bird feeder couple of times a week, hope that takes care of the problem you mentioned. I love to watch/listen to hummingbirds and change their sugar water feed once a week because mold can grow it. Love to watch the bluejays take a “bath” too. Can hear birds in their nest at night, but not sure which of the three types of birds that frequent my yard is up there.
babka, good collection of quotations. And yes, Cardinal Mahoney’s quote reflects the hypocrisy of the church for all its years of covering up pedophiles.
davesmith, I understand your point, but we have created tax shelters for the wealthy that allow them to escape even minimal taxation, and frequently pay far less taxes proportionately than middle-class workers. Some of that passed on wealth has never been taxed a single dime. In general, I don’t like the concept of inheritance tax, but when reality is factored in, sometimes it’s the only tax that wealth will ever subjected to.
shoot, when my grandmother died, we had to pay both state (Okla) and federal death taxes, and around the same time there were newspaper accounts of Jackie Kennedy’s estate not having to pay any taxes at all because of shelters and other ways of getting around. Ticked me off!
