Yes, but did the Yankees give Bloomberg the key to Yankee Stadium?
HOWGOZIT said, 13 days ago
Gosh for years the crybabies were lauding–can’t buy a championship. Now that they win–it is all because they bought it.
motivemagus said, 13 days ago
No, Howgozit, as I posted elsewhere, this is has been common knowledge for years now. There’s been amusement (especially by Red Sox and Mets fans) that despite their money they were still mismanaging their team, but the pattern of wins is still higher than anyone else.

Um, excuse me for asking, but what’s a pattern of wins?
I thought if you won the most games, you won the penant and the World Series…so are we considering patterns now?
The supposition has often been that the team with the most money buys the best players and wins the most championships. The Yankees had the highest payroll in baseball during the period between 2001 and 2008, yet, didn’t win any Series titles…

Correct motive–much higher. They have also had to provide millions to other teams which appears that most the other owners did not invest in the team, but only themselves.
HabaneroBuck said, 13 days ago
But, it is fair to say that investing hundreds of millions in payroll to the “New York Yankees” is a reasonably sound financial investment. It is not so financially sound for the “Kansas City Royals” or “Cincinnati Reds” to engage in such a practice. Even if said teams had the Yankee players and success, the monetary boon wouldn’t translate to nearly the degree.

The Yankees have won the American League Pennant seven times in the past fourteen years. That’s a pattern.
You could argue that this is simply, as HabaneroBuck says, a good investment and all part of business. But we continue to cling to the illusion that this is a noble game (America’s Pastime) and should demonstrate sportsmanship – and paying to get the best players (sometimes buying them off the team that beats them previously) is not sportsmanlike.

Not so motive–period.
motivemagus said, 12 days ago
I think, based on your other posts, that we are actually agreeing, HOWGOZIT. It hasn’t been “sportsmanlike” in some time.
