    The Inquisition was SUCH a fun time, for several centuries. Theocracy (ANY theocracy) sucks, that is the real message we should all be getting.

    A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side.

    As Machiavelli said: if you want to gain power, rule #1 is make a big show of your religion. Rule #2 is do anything you want, because you will already have half the population on your side. Hasn’t THAT been mastered in federal politics?
