Doesn’t mean anything? “In 1926 the Dude Ranchers Association was founded in Cody, Wyoming to represent the needs of this rapidly growing industry.” So it has been in the name of an organisation since 1926.

Late late 60s. I remember having to quickly explain (in 1970) to some blue-collar friends that calling them “dudes” didn’t mean I thought they were sissies.

I remember in the early fifties a father calling his little son “dude” . It was a thing they had and it was beautiful, the man died in 1958, the boy was about 7 .
