"In the Sticks" is silly, absurd, smart and LOL funny. It's an affable strip about an ex-golf professional who's inherited a nearly bankrupt golf club populated by three very odd animals who (usually) try to help him make it work.

He’s a bear. A huggable, delicious bear.

Nathan Cooper how do you know when a joke is funny?

I like the color. Bluejays are supposed to be hornery birds.

The first day of any character-based comic is really tough. You have to introduce premise, characters and setting and it can’t be too wordy .. then you have to be funny and compelling enough to make people want to read it again the next day.
I thought Nathan made a great choice by choosing a narrator to set everything up. You get a quick feel for the characters and their playfulness and the idea that Del would be the victim of many of their pranks.
Would have liked to get their names in here somehow and we actually toyed with a Looney Tunes type identifier, but it made the comic seem to crowded and unrealisitic.

@misty.water.color.me…
I know a joke is funny when my editor tells me it is.
Actually, a lot of my jokes aren’t all that funny. After I write some strips, I take a break, look at what I wrote and narrow down the good ideas. Then I try to take a joke that is OK/funny and really work on the last panel to make it as good or unexpected as I can. That’s usually the process.
Analyzed spontaneity, basically.

I just realized my answer was slightly depressing.
Someone getting hit in the groin with a football is also funny.

Nathan,
Welcome to the club… don’t get hit with it. I think a cartoon is funny when you laugh… but then, I’ve been called stoopid before two.

Hey Blue. Funny certainly is subjective.

I’ve never played golf, but this looks more entertaining than the real thing!

Nathan…I ‘m curious to know if you played in the ‘minors’ (i.e., Sherpa, etc) before getting syndication. If not, did you make syndication on your first try…second…or? I’m a wannabe on Sherpa

I went through the old fashioned method of submitting my strip by mail. I think In the Sticks was my fourth idea. I submitted a prior strip, didn’t hear anything back for a few months so I moved on to another idea(In the Sticks).
