    Always wondered why the Yanks call it soccer. I grew up calling it football, since it’s played with the feet, whereas American " football" really isn’t. Maybe, they should differentiate it, by calling it " kicker ".

    From the Online Etymology Dictionary:
    1889, socca, later socker (1891), soccer (1895), originally university slang (with jocular formation -er (3)), from a shortened form of Assoc., abbreviation of association in Football Association (as opposed to Rugby football); cf. rugger, but they hardly could have taken the first three letters of Assoc.

    OTOH, Johnny Carson once showed Ed McMahon a Publisher’s Clearing House mailer sent to him by someone at Rheumatology Associates of Mobile. Took me almost a full year to be able to repeat the bit without laughing hysterically.
