The referee should have said, “HEY! You’re supposed to fill the basketball with AIR, not HELIUM! YOU MORON!!!

the NFL thought of helium when punter Ray Guy was able to hit the gondola in the dome in Seattle back in the day during pre-game warm ups

& MYTHbusters showed that helium inflated footballs do not punt farther than air filled ones.
still, it’s a good gag.

yyyguy: I still wonder about that one. Since punts are often measured in hang TIME, wonder if the helium ones will stay up longer allowing the kicking team to get downfield and cream the receiver.

If it worked, they would have made it illegal by now. Fugeddabout.

@Saucy1121: I believe they measured both distance and hang time. Helium filled neither went farther nor hung longer - I don’t remember the exact reason they came up with, but I believe it had something to do with the fact that the difference in effective weight was so negligible as to make no difference. They have a web site that you can check if you care. I prefer the CFL rule on punts - which gives the returner a 5 yard radius in which to catch the ball but forces him to actually run it back, rather than “fair catch” or let the kicking team “down” the ball. More exciting.

If he threw it so high that they couldn’t retrieve the ball, the REFEREE needs to be tested for steroids!
